Tires too wide?

What are the rules when it comes to having tires that go out beyond the fender. Mine stick out by 1-2" and I have no mudflaps. I haven't been bothered by the cops, but I've heard of some people being bothered.

Anyone care to give any insight as to what I should know?

it really depends on state laws and county crap, i've talked to our chief in town, and said it won't really be a problem with our town cops, cuz they have to much other crap to deal with. but he said the state troopers might stop me because thats all they deal with is traffic stuff.

Ya like mentioned above it really depends on your area. I know around here the cops really dont mind an inch or 2 but come inspection time there are some garages that will fail you on the visual inspection on the spot.

Some states have tire width laws, some don't

Some states require mudflaps with large tires or require them to within the fenders (or fender flares)

my last set of tires came in at a whopping 295-60-15, I measured the tread width and it came out to 11.23 inches.
before that I ran 255's that had an 8.4" width.
and before that I also ran 255's, but on a different set of rims with adapters (different bolt pattern) and my tires stuck out close to 2" from the fenders.
I never had a problem with the law, nor clearance issues.

Well , good for you.
However if you bothered to pay attention to the previous posts , you may not be so lucky in other states .

I guess it's just going to be one of those things that if I get pulled over I'll have to do something about it.

Here we have the "penny" rule. If a cop rolls a penny down the side of your truck and it hits the tire before the ground then its too wide. I however have never had a problem with any police officers even on my 16 hour drive to michigan. It really depends on how the officer feels that day in reality lol most of them don't care.
