check engine light on

check engine light on
hey guys, I'm new here and have a question. I bought my son a 2006 Ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 engine. It's been a great truck and only has 70k miles on her. Well, about a month ago it started acting kinda sluggish when you tried to take off and the check engine light comes on.
I took it to to get the code identified and the tech said that it was running lean on banks 1 and 2. I took it to the ford dealership and they said that it was an intake leak but they couldn't find it.
Newt I took it to a local mechanic that has a good reputation and the tuned it up but the light came back and it started doing the same thing again.....sluggish.
Finally, I took it to another shop that has an excellent reputation but they are kinda pricey. All of the mechanics there are certified and the have had the truck for 4 days and cannot find the leak.
Has anyone here been through this or have any idea as to what the problem could be. Any responses would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

It is most likely an Oxygen senso. I see it all the time at work. If its not an O2 sensor, try looking at the wiring going to it. I have had a few customers buy an O2 sensor because their mechanic said they need it and then return it once the mechanic pulled the old one out and just realized it had come unplugged or it had a broken wire.

I have had pretty good luck with vacuum leaks using the smoke machine. Fill the intake with smoke see if it stays in. You could ask about it when you get there, its what they probably use for evap leaks. Good luck with your truck.
ps also might want to check the baro reading with ids can mess with mixture. Depends on your elavation here in Pa where I am its around 154 to 157ish. If its down in the 140s here it can make her lean.

I haven't taken it to the 2nd dealership yet because shop #3 said that he was positive that it was 2 Oxygen sensors. I had him install them but it didn't help at all. He told me to take it and drive it on the interstate at 75-80 MPH for 30 miles and back and that should fix the problem?????????That sounds insane to me. But I will try it in the am and then it's going to the Ford Dealership.
Now I have a moral delema. Do I pay for the sensors that were not the problem. What would you guys do???????

Did you already pay for them or not? If you didnt I would ask for your old ones back if he does not have them I would not pay him because he threw yours away and they were ok and now you need them. I see p0171 and p0174 codes all the time in the shop and when you look vehical has 2 new sensors from a another shop. And still setting codes. Up to you go with your gut.

The 2nd dealership found and fixed the problem!!!!! It turns out that there was a huge crack in the side of the air box. It was full of water, mud and tiny rocks. They changed out the Mass Air Flow Sensor and the Air Box Assembly. It set me back $780.00 but it's fixed. From now on it will go to the dealership if I can't figure it out.

Great to hear its fixed, aside the price tag of course. Kinda sad the first dealership didn't even check the airbox though

Oh Yea, the wife and I have sat down with him and he offered to pay for the damage out of his savings account but there were so many mistake made and incorrect diagnoses that we have decided to let him keep his money this time but I won't pay for reckless repairs again. I have also learned a lesson in all of this mess. No more backyard mechanics for any of my vehicles. The will go straight to the dealership for a diagnosis. Then I'll call my backyard mechanic. That's for everything fellas!!!
