Fix or buy something else ?

I've posted a time or two about getting rid of the Ranger but haven't done it yet to this point.

It's a 2004 XLT 2.3L single cab that just turned over the 150,000 mile mark a couple days ago. I'll be honest, it's been a pretty dependable truck the past 8 years, but that's one of the things that concerns me about the truck. In 8 years, the only things I've had to replace are wheel bearings and an oxygen censor. I have a feeling that a lot of things are going to start going bad within the next 20-30,000 miles and the transmission already needs to be rebuilt.

Is it worth it to keep the truck and put the money into it ? Would you, knowing that the transmission has to be rebuilt or replaced, invest the money into an 8 year old 4 banger with 150k miles?

I've been thinking about just going out and buying a full size.

If I choose to go the full size route, I've noticed that many of the diesel trucks get better mpg's than the gas, is it worth it to buy a diesel if I don't plan to tow ?

I'm kind of stuck in the same thought process right now...My trucks not old but I'm debating the same thing about a full-size. The deals are so good right now I can get a 3/4 ton truck for only a few thousand more than a 1/2 ton, but I don't ever see myself using a 3/4 ton to its full abilities so it almost seems like a waste. Not sure what kinda deals are out your way at the moment. year end stuff is normally pretty good on new trucks. Plus the fact I plan on buying a house in the next few years...everyones telling me to buy the truck now so I can pay it down before the house.

Diesels are definitely better gas mileage but if you never plan to use it to haul much, then you also have to think about future repair costs depending on how long you keep the truck.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not at all in the market for a new truck. I'll be buying used. I'm not a person that likes payments.

How many miles would you say are too many on a used truck ? It seems that there are about a million of them for sale here in Houston that have 200,000 miles in the $5,000 range, but I'm really not interested in a truck with that many miles.
