Leo got me a 2002 Explorer OEM L/S. it took about 2 hrs install. basically just need your normal socket set, a copper top hammer. and whatnot.

after I get my act together (cuz im still bouncy up and down hehe :-D), im gonna write up a how-to for it.

Hmm, very nice, I wonder how it compares to an aftermarket LS.

I kinda wonder that too, the way this drives, doesn't seem like its an OEM product :)

Well, that's surprising since I thought our axles were 28 spline and the Ex's were 31 spline! I would not have thought you could put it in there. I guess if you reuse the stock gears that go on the axle?

How did you set the pinion lash? That's the only "critical" setup on the install and if it's not done right the rear can be trashed pretty quickly if it's off a lot.

John, I had doubts that it was 31 spline too. I looked it up a couple times online, and it said that all explorers were made with 31 spline axles. when I got the carrier from leo, I counted 28 twice, and had my dad count it once, and he counted 28 also. I don't know what was going on with that, but it works :)

I did all the "messy" and handling taking the open out, and new one in. brian's dad did the measurement, and after we was done, he told me that it was soo close, that it didn't need any measuring. we even used the same shims. I would imagine it could differ from different axles to another?

Very good! Glad to hear it worked out. I guess if the carrier is dimensionally nearly exact that could mean no adjustment is needed. It's needed when you regear -- but then different ring and pinion gears have been installed and clearance could definitely change.

I like my limited slip -- but I still want a locker someday I think. My limited slip was quite limted today getting back down off the mound I did flex shots on. My front wheel ended up in a hollow, and the torque to the grounded rear wheel was not enough when I tried to back down. I had to use the emergency brake trick: put the e-brake on about 1/2 to 3/4 tension (or what I thought was that) and then I got enough torque to the grounded wheel to back off the mound.

that makes sense when you re-gear. im just usin my stock 4.10 gears, and everything went out smoothly :)

I can't wait until next centralia, im gonna try to save up again, and come out to the next meet. :D

Do you got pictures of your flex shots??? :D

hmm, did you use your old gears on the new carrier phil? if he did, he may not have needed to set the lash again, as long it was tight and didnt whine, he should be ok, but generally yet, there is a specific procedure you should follow to set the lash

yeah, did use the old gears. we only took out the Big Ring Gear, and ABS ring, that was associated with it. I believe he did check it. but the guy that basically helped with that part said, that the before and after, was so close, that he didn't really need to check it.

as im driving around yesterday, it was smooth, and when I hit the gas, .. umm.. the truck moves :) and all you hear when you have the drivers window down, is the back left wheel kinda churn and chatter..(meaning it's moving) :)

Cool, glad to hear it went that smooth.
Ya know I have a OEM L/S and thats all I have ever had and I can't really tell you if its great or not because I don't know what anything else feels like. But if you are that excited about yours then it must really make a difference.
