Finally put Explorer Power Seats in Std Cab!!!



Today me and my buddy 83boss from FourEyedPride.com put in power seats out of a 1998 Explorer Sport in my 2000 Std cab. We didn't swap out the seat tracks. The only mods (so far) is we hollered out the inside (closest to the trans hump) front mounting holes for the larger bolts and then cut the leg off the back inside to make the back outside legs touch the floor board. Then we drilled a hole and installed a backing plate and bolted in the back leg that was lefts. Ended up being completely level. Only real problem is that the seat is held in with 3 bolts instead of 4 (may not be as safe but I'm willing to live with that).

There is still a mod to be done:
The back rest of the explorers is straight where the ranger's bend at about 40 degrees at the headrest. This allowed the ranger seats to be reclined back further. So when I get a chance I'm gonna disassemble the back rest of the explorer seats and bend the metal so that it has a similar bend so the seat can come back further. Because right now, me being 6'2", its a BIG CHANGE in the way you sit. My head feels really close to the roof now. But it this problem should be almost eliminated with bending the headrest.

The sport seats I have seen (sold) have adjust head rests, try twisting them.

be careful bending the frame. if you bed it too much, then the foam/cover will not fit right. it will cause the cover to wrinkle all up at the bend point.

explorer seats up til 01 have built in headrest, not removable.

’01 Sport Seats have ajustable head rests, maybe an option on the two I tore apart but they were adjustable.
That was one of the selling points for one set I sold; the guy wanted to remove the head rests for the seats to fit a small 32 Couple.

i think the sport tracs has the removable headrests, along with the 02+ explorers. those look like the newer style.

after looking online, that must have started in 01 for the sports only.

Hey drppdyllwrngr, you ever taken any of these seats apart? (the backrest part). I've seen different things in the service manuals. One says the seat covers are velcro-ed to the foam and after you slide your hand up and separate them then you can slide it off. But others are saying that you roll it off and there is sets of hog rings to pull. I know to unclip that plastic thing at the bottom.

I figured I would go to the local pull-a-part and cut up a seat (one that was in horrible shape, definitely wouldn't do that to a good one.) and pull the metal frame off and test that out first to see if i can bend it well and to see if I can get the foam and covers on. You are probably right about those wrinkles, but I'm sure they would mostly be on the sides but if I can have a better position then I can live with that.

BTW what exactly keeps the tracks from going back farther than they do. What part of the tracks is the "bump stop" so to speak. If I can get this bend to work out all right then I would like to see if I could just get about 2 inches farther back on the tracks.

yes, i have taken several sets apart. what determines if they have velcro or hog rings is the shape of the seat.

the first set use two metal rods that slide up from the bottom, and have just a few hog rings that hold them at the bottom. the 2nd set are similar, but have velcro that runs side to side as well. i think the newer style that has the removable headrest were all velcro.

getting a second set of frames would probably be better. the sides will wrinkle up at the front a little, but there will be more on the front of the cover. right at where your bend is. however, if you were to get them recovered, they could put that bend into the new cover and take care of it.

as for the tracks, iirc, it's a worm gear. when it gets to the end of the gear, it stops. if you wanted to move the seat back 2", it would be easier to remount the seat further back in the truck or possibly remount the seat further back on the seat tracks.

I know the brackets of the Ex Seats are similar but are the actual Seat Pans ?
I mean the part that you sit on, the part with the foam on it.
I can’t believe Ford didn’t use something from one to the other.
Why I ask is because the Ranger Bucket Seats I have and that I swapped with a 60/40 Bench I HAD, the actual seat pans were the same and I use the same OEM Std CAb Brackets from the 60/40 to mount the Buckets.
Where is this going, what I am thinking, if you don’t want the power option, why is it needed, then you might look into removing the power units from the Ex Seat and mounting the OEM Ranger Brackets to the EX Seat Pan and, and see if it works.

To me the pwr opt is not needed for the amount of time I actually change the seat position.

Just thinking out loud.

I have the first set of seats (leather). Thanks for the info. I guess the easiest fix for me would be to get an Ex-Cab....lol

scrambler, as far as i know, the seat pans are pretty much the same for rangers, mustangs, explorers, and maybe even older full size. there are small differences, but have the same basic shape.

Went to the local pull-a-part and was able to tear into a ripped seat. Turns out if you unclip the j-hook on the bottom of the covers and unclip the hook that is connected to a piece of fabric connected to the foam (in the back), you can then slide up the foam and seat covers as an assembly (you don't have to remove the hog rings connecting the foam to the covers). I ended up getting the back frame just to mess with. When I was unbolting it I noticed the recliner handle was the updated one that ford improved to keep them from braking off. 10 bucks for an upgraded lever and a frame to mess with. Not too shabby.

Awesome Link!!!! Yeah the clip are the same even that clip under step 2. The hog rings look the same (attaching the foam to the covers) the only difference I really see is that the frame on the explorers is round tube and the mustangs are flat. Thanks for the link. **added to bookmarks****

no problem. i may not delve into too much crazyness with the ranger (gotta be my reliable DD) but the mustang. cant stop me on that one.

Ok so I finally had a chance to get to bending the seat frame.

Its easier to take the seat out first. Just have to unclip the hook at the bottom and unclip the hook that is sewn to a fabric connected to the foam. The hook is connected to the lower back support cross member.

Then you can pull the foam/cover off as an assembly.

I just measured down from the top of the frame about 10 inches and heated the hell out of both sides with a torch till the metal was orange. Then I put the head on a 6x6 board and placed a 2x6 across it and just jumped on it till it bent. I didn't go the full 45 degrees, I went only around 30.

Put it all back together. Getting the foam to slide just right was a little tricky but I got it back on and put the seat back in the truck and BAM!!! what a difference. Its been a month or so without the stock seats but the ride position now feels just right.

As for the fabric wrinkling: Since I actually bent the frame and was looking for it I saw some wrinkles, but someone else looking at it, wouldn't be able to tell.
