hey,
i see there are alot of people in the fire service. i was looking at getting a scanner, and eventually some blue lights. what kinda set up do you guys have?

 

search for mjones97 on www.youtube.com and you will see my setup. I have a couple videos on there in the day and night. Those videos are on my old Ranger. I will have another one with my BII by the end of the weekend.

 

yeah, i saw those. i searched before i made the thread and saw your for sale. i would love to buy them, but i cant run blue lights until i turn 18

 

Not ripping on you or anything here . But we have seen this before many times . I have a couple questions
1 . Are you a VFF , FF S&R , PD anything along those lines ?
2 . Assuming your not (Since your under 18) you do know in most every state it is ilegal , to have on your vehicle any flashing emergency Lights regaurdless of color , or Strobes in headlights correct ?

 

yeah, i know the laws. im a "junior" vff i just cant go above 6' or use a hose larger than i think 2.5" or any other obvious things. im basicaly a probationary normal member but what i just said.

I don't run anything...no need. I drive to the station in the morning at 6:30 or so...come home when my shift is done :)

Wasnt trying to say you were lying bud , Its just rare to see mebers younger than 18 .
And we have had quite a few good threads on lights and gear , removed when they found the OP wasnt what they said they were ...
And we also have had a few on here we just normall people wanted to run lights for some reason or another ...

So are they going to let you full meber when you turn 18 if so you lucked out pretty good on finding that .

 

i was going to be a vff back home but i needed a high school diploma before i could join and i was still in high school.

 

yeah, when i turn 18 ill be a full member, and as long as i have my fundamental training done (we call it ftp, idk bout you guys and it will be done.) i become a full member and can run blue lights. than i just take ff1 and i get the black shield.
ive even gotten in the paper :-P

The department I used to be on we were allowed to only run dash lights nothing else. So I used a 911EP LS12 light. It was a led light with 4 sets of leds (3 leds to a set) worked really nice before LEDs it was a Federal Signal Fire Beam rotating light. I am currently working on my truck now as I do some installs on the side and I have a 911EP traffic director and some whelen TIR3 leds that will be on my truck (all in amber though). I would suggest LEDs since they draw the least amount of power from battery.

 

CT law allows blue lights of any kind to be used anywhere you want in any quantity. If you just want a simple dash light, the Whelen Talon or the SpecTIR are great lights. The talons are more expensive obviously.

Go with TIR3 or LIN3 LED's for the grill if you want something down there. You options are very limited for the back. Either something like a Talon in the back window or blue strobes in the reverse lights.

To dispel and typical CT light rumors.... No, you can not use flashing red tail lights or any variation thereof. It doesn't matter who or what anyone tells you, you can not use any form of flashing red light in any direction. Amber requires a separate permit although nobody really cares. You can use wig wags in your headlights if the police chief signs off on the separate permit. That means flashing headlights, not strobes in the headlights or any other crafty version.

For a scanner, you don't need anything fancy and you sure don't need the expensive digital stuff unless you really want to listen to the state police.

 

My set up right now, in New Hampshire we run Red/White. No laws on strobes here, yet.

6 - Sho Me Micro Lites tied into a 27 pattern flasher. (2 on mirrors, 4 in grille)
1 - 911EP LS12 Split Red/White dash light
1 - Whelen CSP690 6x90 Power Supply. (2 in blinkers, 2 in foglights, 2 in reverse lights)
2 - Whelen Split TIR6 Amber/Red on my toolbox (not shown in video)

The only thing different now then in the video is, the light in the rear window i took out and I put a toolbox on my truck, and put the two TIR6's on it and the two mirror lights are both white, and removed the amber TIR3 from the grille. Ill take a video this weekend when I clean my truck and post it for you. For now heres a general idea of my set up. I have a digital scanner in my truck also.

In my GMC i am running 2-front led flasher 2 rear LED flasher and strobes all the way around. Got a dash light that i never use just sits up there!

strobes and led flashers are all sho-me

 

If I were legally allowed to have one I'd be all over it. You know they are hot on the radio when running speed traps on I-75 in florida.

 

Why are you not "legally" allowed to have one? Are you just talking about in your vehicle or what? Not up on all the different state stuff for scanners.

 

Some states do not allow the use of scanners in a motor vehicle. His is probably one of them.

 

but a lot of states allow it in personal vehicles that the owner can prove they are a member of an emergency response team.

By word of mouth I "know" that:

FHP uses radio encyption
A scanner that decyphers such encryptions are illegal to operate in a motor vehicle
Uisng a scanner for personal gain/committing a crime is also illegal

 

The FHP system is not actually encrypted. It is just a type of system that no scanner is capable of monitoring. There actually is a difference.

Using a scanner in a motor vehicle has nothing to do with encryption or whether you can make it work. In the state of Florida, its illegal to have ANY scanner in a motor vehicle in the state of Florida unless you are an official emergency vehicle, news media, or ham radio operator.

Using a scanner for personal gain is irrelevant. Using it in the commission of a crime is probably an add-on to the crime in any state.

 

so whats a good/ cheap scanner?

 

I had a Radio Shack Pro 90 a while back and gave it to my dad as a spare. I paid just under $200 for it about 3 years ago.
