Towing?

Im thinking of getting another ranger, previously i had the 4 banger, now im tinking of either getting a full size truck or maybe a v6 ranger.I plan on towing on the weekends my dirtbikes with dual axle cargo trailer 12 footer. But the reason i want the ranger is it gets better mpg.How good of mpg does a lifted v6 ranger get and how much can it tow?or can you do something to it to make it tow more?thnks

Mike,

A lifted anything will have less towing capacity. Think about it, more wind resistance, more rotating mass from larger tires, not to mention more strain on the trans. That being said, if you go mild on the lift and tires, adjust your gears accordingly, towing your bikes around should be just fine. Make sure you get a automatic 4.0 2001 or newer for towing purposes. Oh, and lifting a ranger wont get you much better mileage than a full size. Hell, new stock to stock rangers and F150's are almost the same MPG.

The max towing capacity for a newer 4.0 V6 is around 6,500lbs or 6,300. If you're towing anywhere near the max your gas mileage will be crap. I towed a 21' travel trailer loaded down with a weeks worth of hunting gear and supplies for two guys. My gas mileage was aorund 8-9 MPG. The truck handled it pretty well and I managed to hold over 55mph there and back. I averaged 65mph though but the hills slowed me down. I was flooring it 80% of the time though. That is with stock suspension and 31's. I normally get 20-21 highway and 17 in town to give you an idea. I would say if you tow a lot get a full size truck. If it's just occasional then get the Ranger. I'm happy with my Rangers gas mileage, others for some reason get terrible mileage and always complain.

Get a fullsize with a V8 if your going to tow alot and often. It just makes sense. The bigger trucks were made for that reason.
