Welcome to the forum

You can do one thing first
On all Rangers the Fuel pump will come on when you turn on the key, but ONLY for 2 seconds, it is not quiet, you can hear a "HUMMMM", from the fuel tank when it is on, and you can hear it in the cab, just turn down the radio, lol.
Turn the key on and off as much as you want, doesn't hurt anything, fuel pump will run each time key is turned on, so try to hear fuel pump running.
If original then fuel pump is 24 years old, and they do just quit one day, no warning they just stop working

Do a 50/50 test, always the first thing to do on a No Start, if starter motor is working
Put some gasoline in a spray bottle or get a can of Quick Start(ether)
Remove large air tube from the intake, need a screw driver
Open throttle manually and spray fuel into the intake
You do not have to put air tube back in place
Try to start engine

If engine starts then dies, you have a fuel delivery problem, i.e. fuel pump, fuel pump fuse, inertia switch; you need a test light or voltage meter to test for power on pump wire

If engine does not start then you have a spark problem, i.e. crank sensor, EDIS-6 module, spark issue is VERY RARE on the 4.0l OHV Rangers

50/50, spark/fuel

thankyou RonD, i did not hear the fuel pump at all so i dropped the gas tank and replaced the pump but it still did not start but my brother and i kept smellin this strong odor like an electrical fire coming into the cab , we traced the smell back to the computer and putting things lightly the comp. was in very bad shape and reeked so i replaced it and now its running and the motors to the windows are humming again when you push the switch lol gonna have to put the windows back in track

Welcome Vafudr

I guess everything does go after a while. Keen sense of smell to track down a burning computer.

Very glad it wasn't wiring harneses or plug ins.

Happy to have you in the family.

hey guys i cant figure this out i replaced the fuel pump and the computer and the truck starts and runs now but i have to hold the accelerater all the way down to get the truck to just go 35 and it acts like its bogged down it will kick in every once in a while, as i got the gas on the floor board it will kick in for about 3 seconds then bogg down again it will also die if im at a red light unless i put it in neutural and give it a little gas. could it be the fuel filter???

Ron would you say its a clogged CAT? If your Catilytic converter gets clogged it chokes the engine. Think banana in tail pipe.

Is there a check engine light on? If so what is the code or definition for the code?

Fuel filters are cheap and easy to change. If you have put over 40K miles on the truck yourself I would replace it. If you just bought the truck I would replace it. Heres how.

Here is how to check if your CAT is clogged.

I hope I have helped.

Yes clogged exhaust will prevent engine from REVing up.
An engine is basically a self powered AIR PUMP, if air can't get OUT then air can't get IN
So clogged exhaust prevents new air/fuel mix from coming in fully, so less power, almost like running out of gas because that is what is happening in each cylinder.
But idle should be OK unless exhaust is fully blocked, and then starting would be iffy
It also shouldn't "kick in for about 3 seconds" at WOT with blocked exhaust

When gas pedal is "down to the floor"(WOT, wide open throttle) the computer switches to Open Loop, and runs engine from factory air/fuel mix tables, ignoring most sensors.

And with fuel injection you have to remember there is no "gas pedal", it's an "air pedal" now, the computer controls fuel flow via the fuel injectors, driver controls the AIR FLOW only.
"Step on the gas" should change to "Step on the air", but I doubt that will ever catch on, lol.

Anyway it reads like your engine is getting too much fuel so is flooding out, adding more air seems to make it run better, right?

Check a few spark plugs and see if they show signs of Rich running, blackish residue

On the passenger side top front of the engine is the Fuel Pressure Regulator(FPR), it has the Fuel Return hose connected to it.
It also has a Vacuum line connected to it, check this vacuum line for gasoline
Since you have a new fuel pump now the FPR's valve could be leaking, if it is then Raw fuel will get sucked into the engine thru this vacuum line, making engine run rich and with bad idle because idle is highest vacuum, so sucks even more fuel in

Also on my '94 4.0l I had some work done and the shop reversed the O2 sensor wires
Engine ran OK at cold start, idled fine, and drove fine, after 5 minutes or so the computer starts to use the O2 sensors, and engine started to run like crap.
Also got a CEL(check engine light) which I have never had on this Ranger.
Code was Lean bank 1
It ran great at WOT, because O2 sensors are ignored
Got second code, Rich bank 2
Second code got me thinking and checked wire colors, only 1 wire difference, sure enough they had reversed them

Point of the story is do you have a CEL?
And has there been any Shop work done recently?
Or have you ever unplugged O2 sensors?
