the point to pre-runners

could someone please explain this to me? what is the point? I mean, to each their own yes, but to go out and buy a new vehical and then like, totally swap out the suspension, and put in roll cages and stuff.... besides it being fun, whats the point? is there like races in the sand dunes where u win money or something? also, driving in sand, regardless of where it is, cant be good for anything mechanical....

lmao!!... I guess it's the lack of "desertness" in NY that brough you to ask this...

It's WAY fun and OF COURSE there are races! First one that comes to my mind is the Baja 1000... no doubt you've heard of it. Trophy trucks taking whoops 80+ mph, screaming through the desert hoping to make it to the end. From what I can remember, the prize money for winning the Baja 1000 is like a few thousand or something... not that much. I don't get your "besides it being fun" comment... people spend TONS of money trying to make their lives more enjoyable. Just because one guy decides to spend it on his truck doesn't make him any different than a man who spends it on a big a** TV... except the man and the truck will probably have a better time, haha!
Sand can mess stuff up... but then again... so can salt, mud, water, other cars, people, birds... as long as you've got a good air filter then you're ok for the most part. As with any off-road vehicle, maintenance increases with time spent off-road.

a prerunner is a truck that runs the race course prior to the actual race. race drivers will pre-run the course to get familiar with the terrain while keepign their race truck in tip top shape for the race.

people call a lifted truck with fiberglass a prerunner or since it has a bumper its a prerunner. some may like the prerunner look, whatever.....

bottom line is.

IT IS NOT A PRERUNNER UNLESS IT HAS ALREADY OR HAS THE CAPABILITY TO PRERUN AN ACTUAL RACE COURSE

now with that said. its fun, that is why people do it

there is a saying in racing....

"if you want to make a million dollars, start with two"

its not because of the money, its going out to the desert having a blast with close friends and family

A "Prerunner" is ANY vehicle used to pre-run a race course. It could be a motrocycle, atv, truck, ect.

What I would like to know is why are Desert Trucks allways connected to Sand?

If you want to see what its all about, meet me out in Barstow CA this Saturday.

Yea, and he asked if they raced, so I provided links to most of the sanctioning bodies.

Alon defined a prerunner, I further defined it.

I still want to know why desert trucks are associated with sand all the time. (just because I'm curious)

Now he can be an educated New Yorker.

I have numerous friends who think I'm nuts for the time and money (mostly time as I'm cheap) I put into my truck in order to offroad. As has been said: "to each his own".

i love speed and offroading so a "pre-runner" truck is something that would be a lot of fun for me. imagine going 100+ and your truck glides right over everything

All depends on where you go... we have everything out here in SoCal! But for the most part I agree... just "dirt" and small rocks and stuff...

There's a few videos posted somewhere where they have a camera mounted on the truck and filmin' while it's runnin' around hittin whoops at high speeds and the camera doesn't even shake around... so sick...

umm, ok. in case that wasn't a joke, we happen to be one of the most active Ranger areas(SoCal that is, where pre-runners are associated with) on this site

lots of posers, maybe

but, in my opinion it is a lot of people who use their trucks. i see tons of nice trucks on the road that i also know get used. if you saw mine you might call it a poser(though i am not a pre-runner, with the bumpers and glass, just a lift) but i still use my truck and those who have went off-roading with me know that i use it. i think that it is ignorant to think that just because you see a nice pre-runner in a parking lot that it is a poser
though if you are talking about all of the lifted full size trucks we have running around then i would have to agree, then again they are usually running 20's on 40"+ size tires and look like show trucks

if someone calls their truck a "pre-runner" and claims to have spent quite a few grand on suspnsion alone... they sure as heck better be USING their truck... although I do agree, that SoCal is full of quite a few posers... not many that I've come into contact with... but quite a few...

i'm a poser because i go over curbs in parking lots.

i have never once been to a meet where we just jump curbs and stare at each other in a parking lot, as you put it.

all the meets ive been at or hosted we've barbecued, done some mods, talked about things TOTALLY not having to do with rangers or trucks at all..... hell i met my girlfriend from meets. what is the point to anything? what was the point of this thread? what is the point of me posting this? whats the point of anything? because you want to, because you like doing it, because its fun.

calling a truck a prerunner or saying that driving through the desert fast is prerunning is stupid because thats not what its doing. its like trying to call a truck goign through someones front lawn after it rained mudding or calling driving fast on the street racing in nascar.

a prerunner is a truck/buggy/car/dirtbike/atv/a person actually running with their feet, that goes through a race course before the race. It is a vehicle that is capable to be raced if so desired and could actually keep up.

"prerunner" has become a look rather than a function.... that bothers me

Lol that pic is hilarous. Jus cause of the earlier "jumping curbs" comment and a pic of you guys up on a a curb.

I never understood prerunner fully. Doesn't a prerunner drive infront of the NASCAR vehicles? or that kinda race.... I dunno whatever. Not my thing. I like to offroad, I don't like to drive stupidly.

^ posts like that are uncalled for.

"Not my thing. I like to offroad, I don't like to drive stupidly."

they aren't just driving stupidly. there is alot of skill involved in desert racing. 100 x's more skill than you climbing around on some random stuff, or going through mud in your ranger.

p.s. - the vehicle in front, in nascar, is the pace car.
