Are front dust covers necessary?
I have a 1993 Ranger Splash, 2.3 with RW drive. The front brake dust covers are ate up. Because the screw holes are ate out, they are rubbing the spindle and making noise. I have tried every parts store I can think of including Ebay, Rock Auto and Amazon, but replacements are not available. There is a 'self-serve' parts place about 20 miles away, but the closest thing they have to a 93 is an 86. Not sure if the covers would fit even if they are available. So, I am thinking of just leaving them off. Probably a lot of dust on the wheels, but should I be aware of anything else? Thanks..Ron

I assume you mean the splash shield, like a backing plate.
The front side of disc brakes are covered by the wheel but spoke style wheels leaves front side exposed
Rear side uses "splash" covers, are they needed?
Yes
Are they required?
No
Google: ford FOTZ-2K004
Thats the part number for 1990-1994 Ranger disc brake splash covers
They shouldn't rub the "spindles"???

Thanks for the reply. I checked and that part is for a 4 wheel drive. Mine is a 2 wheel drive and it is physically different. But you gave me an idea. I will call Ford and see what the part number is and maybe find it on the internet. You don't happen to know the part number for a 2 wheel drive do you? I did reinstall the old eat-up shields with a couple of fender washers where the screw holes are eaten away. It will work for a while, but I will be looking for new shields. I was calling them splash shields, and the parts people told me it was a dust shield. Who can keep up with all the jargon changes..

Try E9TZ-2K004
Ford part numbers are like this
E9TZ = year and model
2K004 = Slash shield for ANY model, a Ford mustang or T-bird would use this number for splash shield
E9 = 1989, E = 198, 9 = 9 so 1989
TZ = truck generic
FOTZ-2K004, so this would be 1990, F = 199, 0 = well 0, so 1990
Ford only changes a part number when the part changes, so a 1989 part number can be found on a 2018 Ford, if part never changed when it does change Ford update it for the year it was changed
For 2WD I found E9TZ-2K004, and then no other change until I found F87Z-2K004, so 1998, and 7Z is Ranger specific not generic truck
That would lead me to believe 1989 to 1997 2WD rangers and some other Ford trucks all used that part
With Splash shields or other parts that have a Left Right side there should be a suffix like
E9TZ-2K004-A, for right and -B for left, not always but often
