Mecron/Mecron V ATF is the correct fluid. It takes 5 to 6 qrts.

Also your shifter bushing might (actually probably is) be toast. I would look into replacing that. I have the link to the M5OD bushing replacement kit but I think you have the early Mitsubishi tranny.

First of all open the fill plug and stick your finger in. Can you touch fluid? If so remove your finger. Is the fluid still pinkish red? Does it have a burned smell? If you can't feel fluid you'll need to add some. If you feel fluid the problem may be in the shift linkage.

Oh, wear thick gloves if you haven't ever taken off the fill plug. It'll be a knuckle buster for sure!

If he has the 2.9L 2wd he may have the Mazda. He needs to figure out what tranny he has because the Mitsu requires 80-90W and not ATF like the newer trannys.

Ohhhhh, yeah I don't know enough about the pre-93 stuff. Like I said the Mitsu is before my time on these trucks.

Defiantly need a more 83-92 oriented person in here.

Yeah I've had both 92 and 93 XLT's. The OP needs to give little more info in regards to his vehicle. I ran 80-90w in my 93 with the Mazda tranny with no issues.
