Unauthorized oil change rant!

Today I took my truck to the dealer to have the ball joints checked out. They did what I asked, but upon returning home I noticed that they also changed my oil. They replaced my Mobil 1 M1-210 filter with a Valvoline filter and replaced my Mobil 1 5w-30 with whatever bulk #@$%! they are using this month! Another strange thing is that I have a Fram Suredrain, that should have given some indication that I change the oil myself. I'll be getting a call from the service manager tomorrow - whatever. I'm due for a change in 100 miles, so I guess it's not that big of a deal. Should I just look at this as a free flush and change on schedule, or should I actually due some kind of flush (which I didn't do when I switched to synthetic in the first place). I guess I just answered my own question, I'm just annoyed.

if it was free why complain but if you had synthetic and they switched back to reg oil that would irritate me

You don't need to flush. It'll be nice clean oil you're dumping out, and the detergent in it is fresh and should suspend residual dirt. I'd just put your favorite stuff back in and not be concerned.

I know that you are right, but stupidity like that annoys the daylights out of me! I also can't help wondering if there isn't some poor guy riding around thinking he just had his oil changed.

GET RID OF IT! I have known SEVERAL of those to stick open and dump all the oil out all over the ground. They are useful yes, but if you care about the engine in your truck, ditch that thing ASAP.

As for the oil change, make it known that even though it was nearly due, you still prefer to use synthetic oil that next time you have to bring it in, they are not to touch your drain plug or filter.

Yeah, I'd be torqued up too, don't get me wrong. I just meant that the oil they put in won't hurt anything and since you were due for a change anyway it's not hurting you financially really.

I definitely would let them know about your dissatisfaction with their pre-emptive oil change tactics though! I guess they figured they were doing you a favor, and for many folks they might have been.

You're right, "no harm, no foul", but this whole experience has been a pain in the butt. I spoke at length with the service manager about what I wanted done. When I made the appointment I told the adviser what i wanted done, and suggested that he discuss it with the service manager, he said "fine drop it off anytime". I went to the lot at 9:30 pm to use the "night owl" box, but the parking lot was chained off, thank goodness for 4 wheel drive. At 1:00 pm today they called and said they need more information (read hadn't even started yet), so I make the request a third time, wait the rest of the day, and come home to discover this. I called the folks at Mobil 1 and they are sending me a decal package (for use under the hood) for both vehicles, so hopefully this won't happen again. In case any other Mobil 1 users are interested in the decals, call 1-800-662-4525 option 1 and they'll hook you up. The package is free.

^^^ yeah, change it when its due and call it good, look at it like this, you got a free flush. FYI for next time, whenever I took my old truck to the dealer (GM) they would change my oil for free if it was in for warranty work. I just stuck a post it to the window that said: Synthetic oil DO NOT change....

That's interesting, I hadn't heard about Sure-Drain failures before.

On the other hand, I've been using Fumoto drain valves for many years and I've never once heard of a failure with them.

www.fumotovalve.com

Because it has no drain hole from the factory, I even decided to drill, tap and install one in my SHO's MTX (manual 5-speed) tranny pan for easy fluid exchange:

100 miles away from being due? Maybe the oil looked like ***, but I agree they should have asked first. But I wouldn't make too big of a stink about it since you didn't receive any harm

Why not use Mobil 1? They use a Valvoline filter for the "basic" oil change, and a Motorcraft for the "premium".
