Ranger happiness?
I'll start. I wish I didn't get my truck, after owning it for a few months I really am not sure why I got a truck. I wanted a truck because I wanted to eventually get a small boat or something. With fuel prices the way they are thats not gonna be happening any time soon. On top of that the truck is slowwww, and doesn't get the best mileage either, and can't go offroading in the Florida muck with my 1wd on 33's either. What I really wish is that I got a Volkswagen, I like the cars, I like the style, I like most of the people who own them, I just click with the cars and owners (nothing against the people here obviously). My truck is up for trade now. [/semirant]

We could trade
My Taurus with the 24v Duratec does great on mileage and is alot faster lol. About the truck, I got rid of it becasue of high payments ($500/month). However that's after I got my 1st cell phone ($50 more) and that was it. Otherwise before i hung in there and my rents payed the insurance. Heck I even had enough to slightly mod and maintain her despite the tight budget lol. I gave the truck to my parents (anniversart gift) to trade for a 2004 Taurus and kept the 94 Taurus GL for awhile. Much as i miss the truck, being payment free is like being 16 again...til it got more problems due to age and trade that in for the 02 SEL I have now.
Actually the truck back when I bought new had BETTER mpg then that POS 94 Explorer I had before.

ive always owned cars, and i cant imagine ever going back. i know the fuel is real issue, but i figure i can "afford" it (barely) for the time being. its worth it to me. 15mpg really isnt too bad. i didnt buy my truck because of the other people that own them either.. lol
as for your off roading dilemma, get a locker!

I love my Ranger. It's perfect for me. Small and compact but it can haul loads, tow, and I can have fun with it. It gets me into trouble and every so often it costs me some good $$$ to fix it up but I wouldn't trade it for anything else! I just had to get a camber kit and alignment for it. Cost me $300 for everyhting. If I had the knowledge I would have done it myself.
I do however like the VW too. The clean diesel Jetta 2.0 has me interested. The Ranger isn't going anywhere though.

it was weird for me. i've been looking at rangers off and on for years. somewhat undecided whether or not to get one when im able to, mainly cos i see so many of them around here in california. but one day. i decided that i'm gonna get a new truck. i almost gotten a '97 F-350 powerstroke. what didnt stop me was that my bank wouldn't have been able to finance it cos it was too old for them (now i could have pulled out a simple loan, oh well). so, not one to go home empty handed went ahead and looked some more. while i was looking through the internet, i layed my eyes on what would be my truck. what sold my truck to me was the twin shifters and it was the fx-4 lvl2. so i called my bank again and managed to get an auto loan and gotten my truck. for the most part im happy with it. no real problems as of yet *knocks on wood*. hell my mileage isnt even that bad. even with the throttle to the floor, i get around 15mpg. otherwise i would get 17-19mpg. and those twin shifters!!!!!!

You want my honest opinion on my Ranger. I've been rather disappointed with it. I love the thing, but it's probably the worst Ford I've owned. My Bronco was solid, left me stranded once... the day it died, and never had anything major break. Since I've owned the Ranger, I've had the diff blow up on me, I've had issue with the suspension and the fact the shocks blew when it was ramped and got 2 ft of air (I jumped the bronco numerous times and never broke anything) and now my driver's window jumped a couple teeth so the motor continues when the window is completely up.
I love my Ranger though. Don't hear me wrong. If I didn't love it so much I wouldn't have bought it. I'm just a full size truck guy. Always have been. If I had my preferance, I'd be in my dream truck...
a 2002 Ford F-350 PSD almost identical to this one. I added my appearence stuff to it in Paint a few weeks ago when I was bored

I love my truck. It has been a royal been ever since I bought it and i've been constantly fixing it but I still wouldn't trade it. I need a truck to much just for normal stuff hauling dirt, camping gear and towing. I also have a real hard time getting in and out of cars, and I like the visibility that my truck offers. I agree trucks are not for everyone though, way to many people are using super duties as grocery getters imo.

i've had my mazda for over 2 years, and got it the day i got my license. only recenty has it begun to give me trouble, but im ready for w/e it throws at me. the truck can get me through any weather, and i still get 20mpg. she'll last forever aslong as i take care of her. thats the one thing about rangers, they seem to last forever. (pending you take care of it)

ill bite... lol
i love my truck, a 98 ranger 4x4 supercab 4 door, with the 4.o. i wish it was a stick and i wish it sat up a little higher, but i love it.
the downfalls, its not currently running, need to pull the engine. it has been nothing but a pain in my *** since day 1. oil pump, rack and pinion, you name it, its broke. dome light is broke, got a new one, and paint is ugly green, thank god the interior dont match.
the upside, i got it for 500 bucks, 126xxx miles on the odometer, its pretty good sized, and has a bit of power.
before i got this, i was looking for a 78 or 79 f-250/350 camper special with a super cab and 460, or a bronco of the same year, but i found this and got it. my dad bought it for me and im working it off, but all in all, i think im pretty lucky to score a free truck, minus my labor for it, and i love it cuz its 4wd. i just wish that when i got this ranger, i would have waited to get an older model with a 2.3, and 80's one.

My previous vehicles: 1993 Nissan 240SX, 1999 Acura Integra GS-R, 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 1.8T.
By far and away the Volkswagen was my worst vehicle ever. Constant problems, needlessly complex repairs, non-existent reliability, electrical gremlins, ZERO non-OEM replacement parts available, predatory dealer service pricing, problems getting warranty honored, etc. The list goes on. The only nice thing I can say about my Volkswagen was that it was fast, handled beautifully, and looked nice. That's it. The car was a piece of junk. I spent well in excess of my monthly payment and insurance on just keeping it running. If I ever had one again, I'd be putting $250 a month in a savings account to pay for the repairs because you cannot predict when they will screw up or how much it will cost. Everyone I know who had one had the same opinion... The owner groups are more like support groups.
My Volkswagen had a problem with its brake lights. They would just stop working altogether or would work intermittently. I was constantly hearing brakes screeching behind me. It was a known issue and there were actually THREE recalls to try to fix it. I was eventually rear-ended because they failed.
Any time a problem came up, the dealer would say it was from owner abuse or neglect, despite the fact that the car was 100% stock and was dealer-maintained. Did I mention that every 5000 miles (or 10,000 miles for the non-turbo) you have to bring them in for a $500 service that no mechanic can do other than the dealer or a VW-specific shop? Yeah, that too. They never paid for a thing under warranty. The only thing they paid for were the federally mandated recalls on the brake light switch.
The only people who enjoy ownership of Volkswagens are people with a lot of money to dump into a vehicle who want a great driving experience, regardless of the cost.
Even with your Ranger's poor fuel economy, you are coming out far cheaper than owning a Volkswagen. I know this first hand.
I love my B4000. Granted, I've had it a month, but it's working well for me. Everyone I know with a Ranger or a B-series has been satisfied. Reliability is more important to me than anything else. I look at the cost of ownership as a whole (fuel, insurance, cost of car, maintenance all together) and these trucks are very cheap to own.
If you want a good economy car that's a better overall value than the Ranger...get a Honda or an Acura product. They're consistently well-built and they stand behind their products. And, Honda and Acura owners are consistently satisfied with their purchases. Any carmaker can make a lemon or a car that's bad...no one even comes close to approaching Volkswagen's poor quality. The numbers back it up at Consumer Reports and several other reputable publications.
Steer clear of Volkswagen, man. You're going to thank me later.

Well this is my 2nd Ranger and while I would like to have a larger truck I don't want all the payments. Actually my Ranger is perfect me and my family. The wife likes to drive it and my parents borrow it for trips to Lowes and the local dump when needed. If I have a big load and need to make two or more trips then so be it. My last Ranger lasted me 10 years before I tranded it. At one point in time I put 40 cinderblock in the back with no problems. Well the mudflaps drug the road a little.
Maybe you could find some ways to personalize it to make it more like you?
