i have a 4.0 4x4 ranger auto 4.10 with the 8.8 and today was my turn to drive between the guys i ride with i pulled a 16ft dual axle carhauler with 2 atvs and a dirtbike and all are gear and gas about an hour each way to our riding spot my question is my truck felt like it did fine locked out of overdrive and all but is this too much for my truck ill only be pulling it rarely unless its too much i dont wanna cause any damage to the tranny or whatever

figure the trailer at 1800lbs, quads at 1000, gear and a bike at 1000 (unlikely)

eh im not sure its not my trailer i know my atv is 780lbs i believe and only the dirtbiker had full gear so id figure total maybe 3500-4000lbs

 

I'm sure its fine, you aren't even to the manufacturers limit yet which is always on the conservative side. Try towing two cords of oak with no trailer brakes, then you will know what over loaded feels like lol.

No problems with it man. I pulled a 6x14 enclosed trailer (loaded with everything we own) from Oregon to Kentucky, over 8500ft in elevation in some spots. This was with my sport trac (4.0L auto) with 4.88s and 33" tires. If the transmission is shifting and hunting for gears a lot you should lock out overdrive. Most of my drive was in overdrive at 70mph or better.
It wouldn't hurt to run a bigger transmission cooler, or at least get a scan guage 2 to monitor transmission temps but it's probably not necessary either.

A trailer brake controller would be helpful if the trailer is equipped.

I regularly tow an enclosed 6x10 sometimes filled to the brim with two motorcycles in addition to full race provisions for both machines.....rollaway toolbox, spare parts, fuel, etc. One trip coming back from VIR we were packed to the gills. Had the bed topped off with tires, pit bikes, race stands, the trailer was stuffed to the roof.......I mean a real sh!tshow going on........anywho, the weight of everything likely approaches about 3700 at times. I've had no problems other than replacement of normal wear and tear items.
