Well, personally im not a fan of chrome. My new explorer came with a bunch of it on it, so i have began the dechromification project. i picked up a spray can of bumper paint and got the front end knocked out.

now i have to do the rear bumper, the B and C pillars, and the little chrome stripe down the side.

there are also chrome pieces on the bottom of the rear corner panels. i plan on painting these, but am worries about it getting chipped off due too the tires spitting stuff at it. i plan on using duplicolor bumper coating on all the pieces in order to keep the black consistent. anyone have any any experience painting a piece like this? im thinking of sanding it then putting a few nice thick coats on and just hoping it holds up.



i also plan on painting the tear-drop rims black. anyone have any advice for this? i am going to paint them one at a time. i will dismount each rim for painting and mount up the spare wheel to my my bfgs so that i can still drive my truck and take my time on each rim.

i know prep work is going to be crucial for this. what kind of paint has worked well for this? is a clear coat necessary?

You should get some black MT Classics and paint the amber on the tail lights red.

 

I would have went color-matched, but it looks good. Gave the front end an entire different look.

 

color matched would have been nice, but this is a budget build. i picked up the truck real cheap. the tires are worth near a 1/3 of what i payed for the truck haha

expo looks good.. i agree with downey, keep the rims the way they are. for the bumper and stuff sand it down good then paint. i'd love to get the old style 5 spoke expo rims for my truck.
sorry to jack your thread but these are the rims im looking for, they are on the 91-92 exploders. i borrowed these rims and tires from a friends expo. but of course he got rid of the expo. so now im searching for a set that i can throw some 33's on.. as the truck needs tires this year.. haha

 

ive painted my bumpers and wheels with duplicolor wheel enamel, its pretty tough paint so a clear isnt needed. prep is key take red scuff pad of something to the bumper, but i wouldnt use a couple thick coats, just keep building up thin consistent coats and finish with a with a nice wet coat.

 

if you want some rims to paint black just switch with me and i will take those tear drops off your hands.

 

I personally liked it better with the chrome. I don't like grips of chrome, but a little bit looks good. Thats why my whole truck is black except for the bumpers, grill and side mirrors.
