Ripped off at the scrap yard?
So I took all a bunch of metal down to the scrap the other day and got it weighted and appraised and got my "money" for it.
Here is what I had:
67 lbs of iron
2 lbs of stainless
17 lbs of aluminum cans
Now here is how much I got: $15
Now I know the price of scrap has tanked but last time I took in JUST cans I got $22. That was back in like 2007 though when aluminum was $.70 a pound. Now it's like $.30.
That seems like nothing for all that iron. Plus when the guy first typed everything in it came of as $97!! Then he was like "oh that's not right".
I have checked and double checked my receipt (which, of course, I now lost) and it doesn't make any sense. Here is what I remeber
Item , Weight , Price per lb , Total
Cans 17 , .30 , 5.10 Ok, good
Iron 67 , 8.50 , 8.50 Lol, wtf, seriously

plus it lists the states allowed for refund on the top or side near the bar code.
when we came there for silver lake last month, i bought a case and a 6 pack of blue moon. i can't return them here in ONT. so now i have 30 bottles of blue moon and i can't do anything about it until go back to the states. (i was just there today and totally forgot!!!!! I remembered as i typed this. *****!!!!)
maybe it also has something to do with the amount people bring. they gve more when it' s 20 bags of cans since they know they'd get more. but for 2 bags, it's not really the effort of processing? i dunno i'm just throwing stuff out there.....
i know aluminum is up, there was an article in the paper that people are stealing cans from the recycle bins and cashing them in....wtf?!?

i use to take scrap metal to places it was my side job back in 07 i got $10 for every 100pds of steel but here know a days alum is about 30cent a pd and batterys is around $4 iron is heavy but for heavy stuff like, iron scrap metal useally goes by 100pds,copperbrass,alum stuff like that goes by 1pound,i took a parted out expo which weighted around 1800 and got 130 for it,and plus they go by how clean the stuff is too,say you get $1 for copper wire but if it's got the rubber crap on it you only get like 40 cent for it,and another thing check with your local scra yards before you go and get prices it helps

I've been doing a lot of scrapping lately as well for work. Prices are down. Regular aluminum is down to .45 a pound. Steel is down to 115 a ton (just over a nickel a pound). I just spent the last 3 days filling a 20yd bin, only had help the 2nd day. Last time I took lead in was .10 a pound. Pissed me off when I worked hard to load up 1800lbs of batteries (two of them were 500lbs each) into the ranger and only walked away with 180 bucks...a few months before it was up to .17 a pound. Hold onto your metal till you like the price.
