So, i found out that one of my catalytic converters is clogged and needs to be replaced. I went to Ford just to get an estimate and the guy at the desk told my the converter itself ranges from $800 to $1200. Thats not including labor costs.

I dont have warranty on the converter anymore. Since I'm not all that fimilar with this i was wondering if this could be fixed easily by just ordering a new cat from summit and having a muffler shop install it? I'm assuming i could. I dont see how Ford says it's at least $800 and I'd rather order one from summit for much cheaper if i could.

order one from summmit-i think somewhere around $300 i think-just guessing
and you might be able to do it yourself, i cant see it beeing that hard to do, if not check your local shops, they may not put it on if you didnt order it from them, so check around first

ha, im in the same boat with my 04 sport trac

ford wants to replace both sets of cats on my truck for 2,200!!!

so i found a magnaflow Direct replacement for 183 dollars at summit

Find out which cats are clogged. Its either the precats on the y-pipe, or the main cats.

Being that you are in California you HAVE to find something that will pass emmissions or whatever you guys have out there...

A universal weld in cat (around 60 bucks) should work for you, but someone has to install it...

Taking it to a shop is just going to cost out the butt

FWIW, all '95+ vehicles carry a federally-mandated 8 year/80K mile warranty on cats.

that only covers manufacturer defects

if they can prove it was an operator error, they dont have to warranty it

heres summits listing for cats for a 3.0 ranger

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294839534

if its your main cat clogged, this would be a OEM style replacement

Whether or not that's true, I don't know. But I doubt anyone can prove anything when it comes to a bad cat.

If it were me, I'd push for a freebie. Nothing to lose and lots of $$ to save.

like i said, im in the same boat, and ive already ***** up the line at ford, even to their customer service number (for ford itself, not the dealer)

and they all told me the same thing

But my went bad from hitting some water and it gernaded the cat, so yeah, it was my fault

dude... you are in long beach.

theres a place in west covina that charges like $80 per cat installed

go to some local places and i'm sure it will be cheaper... if you cant find anywhere, pm me and i'll hook you up with the info for that place

except he will throw a check engine light, and the o2 sensors wont work properly thus making the truck run lean or rich and not know the difference

and since cali has strict smog rules, im sure he has to get inspected and when they find out he has no cats, theres going to be a BIG fine!

yeah i dont need any fines. Ford said that i should have a warranty up to 3 years or 50,000 miles....and of course im passed that.

Im getting a little more worried becasue now the truck seems to hesitate on the freeway...almost like its jerking back and forth and it loses power quickly.

the oxygen sensors are there for 2 reasons, to see if you are running lean/rich and tell the PCM to correct, AND to make sure the cat is working

You can get away without the precats, but you HAVE to run a main cat or a check engine light will show

All you moderators and stuff must be pretty cool. Cause i know on other forums if you even mention removing cats and other illegal stuff like that its like you pissed on their mothers grave and the comments are removed and whoever made the comments are banned. I for one could care less either way. Just my .02$

two things.. one you can modify the o2 harness to make the computer to think there still is a cat.. not recomended over a $1000 fine.. and two like Rockledge said they come with a warentee from the feds, for emission control systems and carry either a 7year 70k or an 8year 80k depending on if its a CA car or well, other.. so you need to check that out, i know for a fact that at the very least i Audis are covered but why would the feds only cover Audis?

hmmm...well i found out its one of the precats...the one that sits right in the middle and connects after the first precat on the driver side. Now that my car is running like crap shouldnt this universal one work?

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

The guy at Ford said it was gonna be almost impossible to find one that was 0bd-ll compliant....could it have been this easy to find one that would work. I know they just wanted me to go through them. Stupid thing is...they wanted to sell me the precats along with the main cat as a whole set....Quoted me about $1300.

idk bout rangers. but on newer mustangs people remove their cats and use a mil elminator which stops the check engine light most of the time. its nice tho, on my 88 the o2 sensors are before the cats.
