round or square

Looking into a trailer hitch for an upcoming trip...whats better or is there any real difference in the round tube type and square tube type trailer hitches?

Also, If anyone has a class III looking to sell, let me know!

From my understanding it doesn't make a difference. I have a hidden valley hitch receiver, the square one and it seems just fine for me. Still havent used it yet, but its there. For recovery purposes that is.

I have a round tube and pull a 3500 pound boat all over with no problem. I think its just whatever style you want, there's no real difference in strength.

i doubt it would make a difference but it would actually seem like the round one would be stronger. no corners on it as weakness points

basically im just getting a trailer so I keep my Mattress and box spring from getting drenched in the inevitable rain. Other than that there will be a few odds and ends, tv, and luggage.

Nothing really heavy so to speak.

the corners actually are a strengthing (sp) point if welded right. if not connected right it can be a very weak point tho

beard also made his own hitch btw

I pulled my 5,000lb trailer with my ranger on a class 3 tube style hitch without a problem, I've pulled the same trailer with 2 trucks that have square hitches without any problems either. So, I don't think you should have any problems with round or square tube if its anything around that weight or lower.

I have a round tube hitch which has my rear tow hook and it's been used to jerk full sized trucks out of deep mud and it's still intact. I think the the quality round ones are just as strong probably.

Mine is a Hidden Hitch class 3 round tube I bought 6 years ago for my other Ranger and moved it to this one when I wrecked the first one.

does anyone have the measurements for the mounting bracket in case I end up finding something that was cheaper but not made for a ranger....

I do not, however the hitch mounts to the same point where your rear bumper connects to your frame, using the same bolts. There are two bolts on the bottom of the frame where the bumper brackets connect, then there is a third bolt on each side (at least on mine) that goes through the side of the frame for more structural strength.

It really shouldnt matter anyway. as long as you tow within what it is rated for, you should be ok. and as for tips. try to load anything heavy on the axle of the trailer. let the trailer take the weight instead of the @$$ end of your truck. and becareful where you drive into. if you dont have experience, maneuvering can be a problem.
