Rust behind rocker panel

I have a 99 extended cab Ranger with the open rocker panels. It befuddles me that these chambers are open which allows the collection of mud, goo, etc. I am finding rust spots in there. I am contemplating curatives to stop the rust from eating my truck prematurely. The options that have come to my little pea brain include spraying oil, herculiner, permatex rust prevention, etc. I am curious what others have done to deal with this problem.
thanks.

Get your rig undercoated. Rust chek works well so does fluid film. You can buy spray cans of rust check that will do your rockers, but if there's rust in there it's behind your fenders and in your cab corners too.
