high pitched noise at 3500 rpm

I noticed the noise in the fall right before I started driving with the windows up, then didn't notice it again until I started driving with them down again. I am getting a high pitched noise from the front of the truck at +/-3500 rpm. I noticed it in first gear, then tested it out in second gear and once more in neutral. With each test, both in gear and in neutral, I heard the noise. It sounds as if somebody is dragging thier nails down a chalkboard, or how bad brakes sound when coming to a stop.

I believe this would be engine, but I am not sure as to what it would be. It doesn't seem to be too serious as it has been doing this since the fall and I haven't felt any problems with performance, shaking or anything else. Any ideas on what it could be?

I have the very same problem.

Two possible angles, sadly i've faced both..

First: The fanbelt uhh, pulley has gone bad. 40 dollar part straight from ford for it, sortof easy install, i had them do it though because my 3.0 has a fancydancy balancer in it. You will notice it is the pully if A) you can spray the fanbelt with belt dressing(one that holds, not lubricates) and it goes away for a bit and B) if the noise tends to change and be very loud to changing RPM. Also mine faded away after the engine warmed upa good deal..

Second: You could need brakes replaced in teh front. Just tonight my dad rode with me to listen to my brakes squealing.

I have that, but it isn't really bothersome. It's quiet and most prolly wouldnt notice it. I think it sounds kind of cool.

Well it is definitely not the brakes, unless I have some sort of engine brake that I don't know about I just changed everything over last week, so brakes are a no.
I have gotten word from somebody else to take off the belt and run the engine up to 3500 rpm and see if I get that noise, if I don't get it, then it would be one of the parts with berrings, ec. altenator, water pump, etc. If I do get it, then my guess is it still could be the pulley like you mentioned. Only thing is that I'm only getting it at the 3500 rpm mark, so I don't know if it is the same thing.

I could be the air whistling past something in the intake, but that usually sounds more like a moose call.

Have you looked at NHTSA.dot.gov?

I find BC5214961001 for a "whistle" and BC9674961001 for Axle Whine.

I'm still looking for a reference to the front (4wd) whining sound that said it was axle seals. If I recall correctly, it was a grease/dust seal for the front axle shafts to wheel bearing area that was making light metal to metal contact?

Anybody recall seeing that one anywhere? I know I'm getting old, beer-boozled and forgetful, but this one is sticking in my mind, so it must be reality.....

I also seem to recall an instance where the crank pulley was slightly hitting something down there, making a whiny squeal.

Does it do it sitting still with revving the engine? That would sure eliminate a lot of guessing.

It does it in any gear that I am in, 1st through 3rd, I haven't checked it out in any other gears, because that means going a bit faster than the law allows. I hear it when I rev the truck in neutral as well. The sound starts at 3000rpm, and stops after 3500rpm.

mine is doing the same thing...doesnt matter if in nutral or drive.

I replaced the belts and idler pully (needed it anyways) and it is still making the noise.

I took off the 4.0L shield and reved it.. mine seems to be comming from the fan clutch itself.. or something in that area (but not the idler pully cuz its new lol)

Could be the fan clutch haha. All those fan belt bearings, if they rotate, can develop a squeal.

Winks try spraying it with belt dressing first. If it goes away you can probably blame it on the belt.

I had to get my belt tensioner pulley replaced. Have you thought abotu that> It has a "balancing" unit in it and it went bad and was making an annoying embarrasing squealing noise.

My fan clutch already went on me about 6 months ago... if it goes on me again, I'm going with an efan.

I'll try the belt dressing first, if that doesn't work, I am going to try to run the engine with no belt tomorrow to see if I get the noise. That should rule out a bit of information there... I hope.
