Fuel Mileage

Jon Olson. 99 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0. I am Currently strugglin to get 15 mpg. It has 148,000 so it doesnt have a ton of mileage on it so i am kind of puzzeld to why it is gettin such horrible mileage I have a set of 31" destination LE they are just an aggresive highway tire. I am wondering what I could do to try and boost the mileage. i have tried new fuel filter, new plugs and wires, fuel filter, keeping my foot off the floor. when i put the 31"s on it boosted my mileage by .5 or 1 mpg. not much but ne thin helps. In my opinion the 4.0 is a little overkill for it, but its got plenty of power to play around with. Does anyone have a similar problem? I'm perty much up for anything you have to say. I am hoping that i can squeeze it up to the upper 18 range. Thats far from the mileage it got when i bought it. When i bought it, it was getting 21 and 22 on the highway drivin 65 at bout 2200 rpm and now with the bigger tires its getting 14 or 15 driving 65 at bout 2050-2100 rpm. I would think that would make a bigger difference than that. I am up to try anything. Thanks for your help.

I'm of no help, but you learn to deal with getting ****ty gas mileage. I get 11 on average, 12 or 13 on a good day with my 3.0.

my truck gets ****ty gas milage, so i replaced heat sensors, o2 sensore, plugs and wires, fuel filter, fueld system cleaner, and i replaced the TPS, i read that the TPS can drastically reduce gas milage, i don't know why i just saw that when i lookd up the part since my truck was acting up and the TPS was throwing codes. I havent gotten to fill up yet since i replaced it, but i can let you know if there is anydifference when i fill up next

I would think most are getting about the same. I get about 15 with 33s and am willing to bet the milage would go up if I went back to stock tires.

well i have a 2002 4.0L with 70,000 miles on it and before i lifted it i got at best 15.5 mpg and when i lifted it and went from 245 75 16 tires to 265 75 16 tires i get at best 14. i might get a lil better in the summer but it deff went down a good 1 mpg when i did that. It says online it gets 15 city, 18 highway. Not to bad but yes rangers are known for bad mpg. Dont like it? By a hybrid!!!

I now average 21 mpg with my 95 with 249,xxx miles on it. I've done all the mileage mods, from K&N to the electric fan. I'm running 265/70/16's on mine as well. Check my profile for all the mods I've got.

I have a 1998 4.0L with 31"s on it and 168,xxx and I get at best 17 highway with around 15 city. My buddies 04 4.0L gets around the same so I think we all just have to deal with s***ty gas mileage.

i have an 03 4.0L, i average about 15-17mpg, theres not TOO much that you can do to have it go back to where it was before, like mtlove said, just slow down a bit on the highways, maybe go 55-60 instead of 65. dont gun it when you dont need to (im quilty of this lol) im still trying to have one tank of gas used normally - i.e. no hard revving, no quick acceleration, and not getting tired of these stupid kids that thing having a loud muffler helps there horse power off a red light (lol). ive gotten close to 300 miles out of a tank before so i know i can do it again.
