Sometime Tach

I have a 91 ford ranger with 2.3l engine. About 2 months ago the tach would work sometimes and other times it not work. When working the engine ran fine, but when the tach fell to 0 the engine had a miss. Now the tach has quit working all the time and engine has slight miss especially when idling. What would cause this problem. I was told that it might be the crankshaft position sensor. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum

1991 Ranger 2.3l gets tach signal from the ICM(ignition control module) located on the front of the intake manifold.
ICM runs the spark system, check wires they often get frayed/loose

Crank position(CKP) sensor is the main timing sensor for the ICM and the computer, engine will not start without a stable signal from that sensor, so no, not the CKP sensor.

But the misfire could be a problem with the ICM which are known to have issues when older, so tach issue and misfire could be symptom of ICM problem.
Many auto parts stores have testers for these ICMs, you bring in that module and they can test it.

And read here: http://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford/...sensor-tests-1

Thanks for welcoming me into the forum RonD and thanks also for the information you supplied. My thoughts were on the crankshaft position sensor mainly but I did not know that I could get the ICM tested at the auto parts store. Will definitely check into that. thanks again.
