have a 2000 ranger 4.0 0hv 5 speed..happy with it til comes time to tow my boat..wondering if should trade towards a newer 4.0 sohc ( supposed to have at least 40 hp more) or a standard cab/ short box full size with a 8..either way must have a 4x4... blue book says my ranger is worth $5000 as a trade..was thinking of getting a set of ported heads but at $1600 unsure wise investment- always heard the heads and cam are the biggest limited factors in the ohv and because want power in the lower rpm range- doubt a cam would help me in me in anyway..wish ford dumped a 8 in the ranger or a diesel I'd be sold!

 

hell go to a dealer and see what theyll give you for it...doesnt hurt

 

In my experience it won't be good.... lol. I'd swap in a V8 before swapping to another 4.0L!

 

trust me ..have thought of finding a explorer and dumping the 8 in.. my truck being a 5 speed would complicate things wouldn't it? prefer to stick with a ranger, don't want some boat truck lol

Not so much with the salesmen... I can deal with them it's the douchebag sales managers that are the problem!

 

thats why i love working at a dealer...i know the sales manager and hes super cool lol...hell they were willing to give me 12K for my truck and thats what i paid for it before TTT

 

thats one reason am so hesitant to trade..when i got my ranger oil in the coolant..dealer had for 2 wks said nothing wrong..had used oil analysis done and proved otherwise...then said both my heads were cracked when i bought it back! so far only found morana and supersix as sources for ported heads

 

How much boat are we talking here?

 

If it were me I wouldn't spend $1600 on a motor with issues. I would spend that money towards a donor v8... find a wrecked explorer somewhere.

 

16' bowrider.. motor has no issues, when not towing truck feels ok just struggles when pulling the boat- takes time to get to speed anyways
