Tapping into thrid brake light

I have a cap on my truck and would like to find out where I can tap into the third brake light wiring in order to power the brake light on the cap.

Has anyone done this? If so where did you grab the power at? I guess I didn't really want to pull directly from the light itself and then have a wire hanging between the cap and rear of cab. I thought maybe there was a place to tap into and then run the wiring underneath somewhere.

Thanks for any help.

Gary

Not sure about the wire color on yours, but there is a bundle of wires that runs under the carpet/ flooring and there should be a solid light green wire that is your 3rd brake light, i drilled a hole in the floor with a grommet and silicone to seal it, hope that helps

What about the connector on the bumper for trailer hookup?

yeah i would just tap in from the trailer lights or the rear lights, or before the plug for the rear lights/trailer lights, just put those in with some but in connectors or quick connects, and get those terminals that you can plug into each other in case you want to take the cap off, i'm not sure if the color changes through out the years but it use to be black with a pink stripe so try looking for that, or use a test prob

most tap right into the driver brake light, use quick disconnects for when the cap is removed, running wires from the 3rd brake light would kinda suck in my opinion

Thanks for all the info. I have it wired now with a quick connect but tapped into the left rear light. The problem is that when I hit the left turn signal the brake light flashes also. That's why I was trying to find the brake wire itself.

Wirelessly posted (Droid2)

Yep, that wire is also used for the blinker...have to go in the cab and find the harness to just get the brake light. Not sure what color. Just use a tester.

The wire color code for the 2007~2011 CHMSL is violet/white. It definitely runs through the interior.

You could also check the 8-pin connector near the rear of the driver side frame rail to see if the VT/WH is there. Unlike most late model Rangers (except STX), the Mazda variant had separate brake and turn signal lights but I do not know if the frame rail harness was common between the two.

yeah i would of tapped into it before the plug were it separates into the the separate tail lights and the trailer lights that way that way the brake light is the brake light, not the brake light doubled as the turn signal wire

go to a cap dealer and get the little converter box. it stops every thing from flashing and makes it work right

That's why I was saying find the wire in the cab. On my truck there were 3 wires going to the tail lights. One was a reverse light, obviously not the right one. And one was running lights. The other was brake/turn. Only way to get a "brake only" is to tap into that third brake light wire. I would take Bob's advice any day tho.
