Thermostat housing elbow tightness?

Thermostat housing elbow tightness?-image.jpg

How tight should this elbow be? I tightened it back up to where the tube was straight up and was afraid to go any further for fear of breaking or stripping something. I put everything back together (P.I.T.A.!!!!) and then I wiggled it and it felt too loose. I put some extra thread sealant on it and I'm gonna see what happens tomorrow. Just wondered if anyone has changed this and how tight you got it. The guys ranger has never had the coolant replaced and it was like acid. It ate some pinholes in the elbow and needed to be replaced.

Best Regards! And thanks for any info!

The two bolts should be tightened to 18ft/lb

There's no bolts... If you make the picture bigger you'll see the elbow with the temp sensor.

Sorry, misread original post.

Yes, that elbow is a known issue for pin hole leaks, fitting should have pipe threads which are tapered, so you tighten it until it is snug and opening is at an angle allowing temp sensor to be installed

Ok well when I tightened it yesterday it was snug pointing straight up I needed it pointing down. If I turned it to where it was suppose to be I felt like I was gonna break something. I don't think I have it tight enough but it's not leaking. I ran it for about 30 minutes up the road and checked everything no leaks. I could wiggle it easily while the thread sealant was still wet so the fitting is not snug. I guess I'll see how it goes within the next few weeks. Thanks for your reply!!
