I just replaced the tires on my 02 off road.When i bought the truck (used) it had passanger car rated (4 ply) tires.I replaced them with Light Truck 10ply rated.My question is--How much air pressure should i have in them?They are rated for 80 psi but i don't think this is necessary for normal use.I inflated them to 50psi.May bump them up if i am going to haul a heavy load.Is 50 psi okay or,will it cause them to wear more quickly?

 

what size are the tires and just curious why did you put 10-ply tires on a ranger? the ranger is not a heavy hauler

 

LT is not necessary on a ranger. 10ply is good for a super duty but not a Ranger. Set them around 35

 

The tires are 245-75-16. I wanted more strength in the tire for off road use and also not sure a 4 ply would hold up to a heavy load.

 

its gonna ride like a tank fyi, i had 10 plys off a superduty on my last ranger and it was rough.

 

my duratracs are an LT tire but theyre C load range...10 ply is range E IIRC

 

I realize 10 plys are going to ride stiff.That's why i thought lower pressure might soften the ride.Just don't know if lower pressure (35 50 psi) will affect the wear of the tires.????? Also,going to be hauling aged manure for my garden .This stuff is wet and heavy.I don't think 4 plys would hold up.

 

well seeing how youre still running the stock size id set them around 32

 

If the ride at 50psi isn't bothering you, leave them there and keep an eye on the wear. 50 may be a little on the high side. FWIW I would never put 10 plys on a ranger. I won't even run them on my F150, too stiff and the truck isn't heavy enough and doesn't haul enough weight

 

My tires are load rating E and ride just fine. I run them at 30 psi

 

My dura's are an E load and I keep them at 35-37ish. It is a harder ride, I'm not gonna lie. I am due for a rotation but it doesn't look like there has been any uneven wear.

I run my LR C tires at 45psi. It rides OK.

 

Glad this came up. What I've always done is to use the factory recommended pressures as a suggested baseline, watch tire wear, and adjust. For me, it just so happens that 35 front and 31 back are the magic numbers on the BFG KO's that I'm running. Uh huh, asymmetric tire pressures for handling and tread wear reasons. When I haul a load of rock or whatever, the rears go up to 55-60. For best gas mileage in normal use, always run the highest pressure possible without causing excessive center tread wear.
