Icon5 Why do I want an Expo Axle?

I may have the oppertunity to get a free Explorer Axle. Other than it's free, why do I want it. I don't know what gears it has yet.

Why are disc brakes better than what I have? Any and all help is appreciated!

Mike

Well overall its just a stronger axle. Could have better gears possibly L/S if you don't already have it.

Oh yeah I think the real reason that you want it is because its free and you could sell it and make a little $$ :D

While the diff is an 8.8 which is the same on 4x4 trucks, the pinion has 31 spines (as opposed to 28) and it is a little more robust than the ones on our trucks (especially the 4x2s with their 7.5 diffs). And disc brakes have more stopping power--something you'd probably be happy for if you are towing or carrying a heavy load. = And most of them come with a limited slip, which is a definite plus if you don't have one already. The track is an inch or so wider on each side.

Try to get the e-brake cables too and the springs and it'll be easier to install. you can use your springs, but you'd have to weld perches on the top of the axle (exploder springs are under the axles).

Incorrect. The pinion is the same on all 8.8 axles. On the explorer axle the axle shafts themselves are 31 splines and the axle tubes are bigger. The carrier is also different to handle the larger diameter axle shafts. The only rangers with this axle is the 2002 FX4 and the '03 up Level II

If I get it, it will be going on my truck and will not be sold., some one can buy my axle if they want it(unless my friend takes it).

Aside from the fact that it is bigger and stronger the disc brakes make it worth it. I love the stopping power I have from the disc's. That has been a better benifit of the mod than the 4.56 gears inside the axle. I no longer have to clean the mud out of my brakes after wheeling which is very nice.

Explorer axles can make your truck fly.

If you don't want it, I'll give you a hundo for it.

Sounds like a good enough reason to me.

How long did it take you to swap axles?
