Possible engine problem?

Ok. Not sure why I actually found this out, but when my Ranger is parked and I rev the engine, it only goes up to around 3000 RPM and it acts like it hits a rev limiter. When I'm in gear (such as first), I can take it up higher (although I haven't gotten it too high).

Then I tried the same thing in Neutral, and it acts like there's a limiter at around 3000 RPM.

Is something wrong? Or is it supposed to act this way? All my other cars and bikes have NEVER done this before.

My Ranger does the same thing. @ 3k rpms you've hit the limit.

yeah, keeps you from throwing a rod. when transmission is in neutral the engine is not under any stress... i cant explain it really but basically if the engine isnt actually spinning the wheels, it can screw itself up at lower rpms

Interesting. None of my other cars have had it. It certainly sounded and felt like a limiter, so I wasn't TOO concerned about it.

Thankz guys.
