E brake cable question

recently replaced rear axle on 2wd 2003 ford ranger. Now the e brake cable is about 2 inches short. The original axle had the nine inch drum brakes. The new axle has 10 inch. With the way ranger brake cables are setup it seems I basically have to have the length perfect as there is nothing I’m able to adjust. My question is what’s the best way to determine the length of cable that I need. I understand there are three sections of cable that are connected. Which section should be replaced? Also is there a trick to disconnecting each section? I’m having a really hard time with the connectors for each section. I’m no pro so please be gentle with me. Thanks for any help......I understand plenty of folks don’t use their ebrake. This is for my kid , so I want to have a functioning brake for his first vehicle. Thanks again for any suggestions
