That warranty paid off I think!! 88 Ranger XLT

As I had written in a previous post, after I bought this 88 Ranger I took it in to be inspected, and the mechanic found coolant from the radiator in the engine oil. Took it back to the dealer to have the engine fixed under warranty, they found a cracked cylinder head.

Dealer replaced the cylinder heads, did a valve job, etc., and then when testing it, he found that they now improved (no longer leaking) cooling system, having more pressure, had opened a seam in the radiator which was leaking. Dealer had him replace the radiator.

On driving it back to the lot after the radiator, replacement, mechanic found steam rising from the dash. I guess improved coolant pressure was too much for the old heater core. The dealer had the heater core replaced as well.

My warranty specified dealer pays half, I pay half. Total cost was $1200, so my share was $600. Not too bad for this amount of parts and work?

$1,200 for all that? That must be the dealer's at-cost price on the work. Pays for parts and the mechanic's wage.

All that work to have done would easily cost you upwards of $2,500-3,000.

Thanks, I am glad to hear that. I thought the price was good, and my share was not so bad for this much work! Feel even better with confirmation! :-)

Was this the dealership 30 day warranty? Here in MA, if you have that warranty, you only pay a $100 deductible and the rest is covered.

annguyen1981, wow! Yes, this was a 30 day/1000 mile warranty from the dealer. Only $100 in MA is amazing. I paid 3400 for the truck, so in MA, I would have paid 100 more, and the dealer would have had to eat the other 1100, meaning he would have really been selling the truck for $2300.

I cannot remember what the mileage limit is here, but I believe that the dealer did not have to offer even the 30 day warranty here, I feel lucky to have only had to pay half!

I dunno CA lemon laws, but I'm guessing lemon laws are very similar everywhere you go... Call a lawyer ASAP and ask them if what they did is legal.

Oh, I know its legal. California's lemon law only applies to used vehicles if the mfg. warranty is still in force .. a 23 year old truck is definitely not covered. And the warranty offered, which I signed and have a copy of, says dealer pays 50% of parts and labor on covered items for 30 days or 1000 miles.

But again, I feel lucky it was covered. Love this truck ... it was meant for me. I just hope the tranny doesn't go now! LOL Its going in soon for new wheel bearings and new shocks.
