Not sure about anyone else but here in Maryland, the state requires both a front and a rear license plate on all vehicles. I was just wondering if anyone had the same law and if they drive with only a rear plate, have you ever been stoped, or questioned about it?

Have the same law here in MA, but usually just let them go with a "Get that fixed", if the person is nice, and doesnt jerk me around, if they give crap, most cops will write em for it.

Illinois is like that as well and i know people who don't have it and haven't had any problems with it.

My question is why not just put the plate on and comply with the law?

Yeah, seriously. How ugly is your state's plate? I treally hurts you that bad to have a 2nd plate on..

And I thought Mass was a 1 plate state. Maybe that was long ago. Seems to me once upon a time you had to pay extra for the 2nd plate in Mass. I know the bracket on the front bumper was a 'mandatory extra' on both new truck I've purchased. It's even an item on the sticker, listed as $0!

Mildly off topic dude, but I've always wondered: how come they don't make everyone move over to the new plates? NH has been through like 3 different plates and some Mass drivers are still running around w/ those old green on white plates. What gives? I know in NY the plates go w/ the vehicle and stay w/ it for the life of the vehicle. In NH the plates stay w/ the owner. What's the skinny w/ Mass?

NJ is a two plate state.
In 1976 they had a commerative 200 year celebration plate you could buy for the front of your vehicle.
The actual plate had to be underneath the 1776-1976 plate.

Does not seem to be a big deal on a truck. (street scene grills excluded)
On a Corvette though it means almost changing the front bumper.
If you bought your truck new in the state you live and it came with a front plate mount, your state requires a front plate.
It is a no charge option put only on Ford trucks destined to states requiring it.

Hey guys, just an intro...

CT requires two. When they will run you plate, it will indicate how many plates were issued to you. If you only were issued one or it comes back as one being lost/stolen/destroyed, you can get away with one. *Usually* they don't care unless they need something to look for. If they care, they will ask where it is and and tell you to do something about it.

Nashua, my city, did this recently. They did a 150 year anniversary plate and people were allowed to place it 'above the state issued plate on the front of the vehicle only'. And they were only allowed to wear it for one year. I never really understood it, seems pretty dumb to me. But hey, it generated revenue, so I'm all for it. I only saw 2 of the plates in use, both were taped up in older folks' rear windows. It has been my experience that some older folks will collect anything just for the sake of collecting..

usergroups?

eventhough texas is a 2-plate state they will rarely pull you over for it (unless they just want an excuse), but if you're speeding or something they will add it to the list. the state police are the worst about it. they will walk around your vehicle and ticket you for anything they can find.

Virginia requires two. I've known people that have gotten ticketed for missing the front plate.

Might be able to get away with it if you're stopped by a local, but a trooper will surely nail you for it.

minnesota requires 2 plates, but since they pull up behind you to pull you over, they check the tags on the rear plate. unless you have a suspicious vehicle, they won't look for the front plate. ( i was stoped twice with my '94 ranger which didn't have front plates.) but now, as i'm older, i have the plate on the front of my current ranger.
