Need help quick please MAF related

Ok, the place I get my truck serviced called and said my MAF sensor is going bad (the engine light was on). Anyway, they want $425 Parts a Labor to fix it. Is this a reasonable cost? Thanks.

PS, I did a couple of searches and couldn't find the answer.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to take this one on the chin. Thanks for looking though.

might be back in the spring, but probably not
CA is really far outside my territory but I had to go to Rancho Dominguez to close a deal
I punched in 'beach' and the GPS put directed me to Seal Beach as the closest

heck no! my MAF went to the crapper earlier this year. its probably the easy installation ever... just go by a new one from Napa. i think mine was like $160. it took literally about 6 minutes to take out the old one and put in the new one. then you can take your old back to Napa and they'll give you like $40 so that they can refurbish it and sell it used.

I'm with mx98ranger... I wouldn't pay more than 200 for a new one. Go to a junk yard and steal one off another pickup

Dude you'd be crazy to pay that much for it. They're horribly easy to install and they're charging you probably an hour or so to install it plus marked up price for it. Buy one from a parts store or get a tamperproof torx and get one out of a junkyard. The last one I got was $140 from Carquest I believe at work.

John just mentioned it, but make sure you get a tamperproof torx to remove/install. It has a hole in the middle of the bit. The parts stores have a set for just a few bucks.

It sounds to me like the shop might be trying to rip you off. Your MAF should have lasted longer than that and that's too much $ for a new one. Before taking the shop's word for it that the MAF is shot, I'd look at the MAF myself and if everything's intact, I'd clean it. All you need to do is spray the wire element with a spray cleaner that does not leave a residue on the wire (or you can use an eye dropper to drop drops of rubbing alcohol on the wire) and then let the wire air dry. Do NOT touch the wire with anything like a Q-tip or rag to clean it. If you still have an engine problem, I'd have another shop check it out to make sure its caused by the MAF. If you have to buy a MAF, shop around at parts stores and junk yards for the cheapest unit. Its very easy to clean or replace yourself, or have a mechanical-minded buddy help you. Don't shell out $425 for a new MAF just because one shop says yours is shot and that's the parts and labor cost for a new one.
