Did the "tie wrap" trick with the throttle cable. I didn't think it would make much difference, but how wrong I was! I almost had room for three of 'em, but stopped at two.

Same here, Daily Driver. Great minds think alike. The Miata sits at home today, though, as I'm stopping by the junkyard to try and score a "new" instrument cluster and cassette stereo for the Ranger.

Well, the junkyard kicked me out an hour early, since everyone wanted to start the long weekend early. I can't blame them, as I got sprung from work an hour early myself!

I did manage to score a new instrument cluster from a '99 Ranger that had a tachometer (my '97 didn't have one). Ripped everything out, installed the new set enough to re-bolt the steering column and reconnect the battery and took her for a road-test.

Everything works fine - tach registers the RPM's that I would expect for a 4-banger at normal speeds AND... THE ODOMETER WORKS!! Bonus was that the odometer of the new gauge set is only about 6000 miles more than what was on my truck. Given that I have no idea when the existing odometer stopped working (but looking at the truck, it looks 160k-ish) I will "call it a draw" as was said by The Black Knight as he sat there armless and legless.

So, I will confirm that you can swap a gauge set from a 2000 Ranger with presumably a 6 and slushbox to a '97 with a 5-speed and have a working tach as well as accurate speedo. All the magic is worked electronically now. The only issue I had was a "FUEL RESET" light, for which I removed the bulb -- seeing as the engine shouldn't have been running if the "FUEL RESET" circuit was actually seeing a problem.

LOL What better combo than a Ranger and a Miata?

I washed the Ranger today but will need to shop for a rear bumper soon, and maybe a hitch after I get the rear frame welded. Too bad, I really liked my set up before some crazed DPW guy in a dump truck plowed into 4 of us. I also need stuff in the front. Header panel, grille, hood, etc.

And congrats on the find, and the successful experiment. I could never figure why they would put a tach on an auto and leave it off a stick.

I replaced my factory fogs. That's the most I've done to it in 10 months.
