Unnecessary Loudness

I went for inspections today expecting to fail because of my E-brake and disconnecting the battery a day before. However I passed both of those problems and failed on the exhaust system for "unnecessary loudness". I have a bassani cat-back and other than that the exhaust is stock. The guy there told me I can't have any exhaust louder than stock or what came from the factory. Prior to this I asked a police officer about my exhaust who told me that I wouldn't get pulled over for it and that I can't be ticketed for it as long as it isn't above a certain decibel level which he beleived my exhaust wasn't.

So I need to quiet my exhaust down for inspections, Is there a really cheap quiet exhaust system that I could slap on for the test?

Hit the junkyard with a sawzall and come home with a few exhaust clamps is what I would try. Remove the Bassani setup and temporarily clamp on the OEM system.

Yeah, maybe I will go to the junkyard. I was thinking though to get a cheap exhaust to leave on for the winter so my bassani wont rust.

Well I can't find an officicial document but looking on other mustang forums it seems that a vehicle really can't be louder than stock to pass inspection in MA. I also found a law proposal to ban aftermarket exhaust systems in MA which failed to be passed but it seems they got their way with these requirements. Almost any aftermarket exhaust system is louder than stock.

I would confirm this is actually true before you spend money fixing it. I would be willing to bet the guy doing the inspection is wrong. That is an impossible rule to have or uphold.

1.) If the exhaust if 50 state legal it is 50 state legal.

2.) The most I've heard is above a certain decibel level at a certain distance.

3.) Tell him to cite the statute. If it isnt there and he still wont give you and inspection pass, contact the proper authorities.

4.) So damn glad I live in FL. No inspections and if it looks like you have a cat and your exhaust isnt above city ordinances you're good to go.

Here in nova scotia they passed a law last year that mechanics must remove your wheels and inspect your brakes as well as the other stuff for our ANNUAL inspection which costs $30. So all that work for 30 bucks, there's a lot of people getting brake work they don't need under the premise of "while its apart" and safety. Not really relevant but I hate it. /hatin

Yea mn has some law that your exhaust cant go over a certain decibel level, its like 93 decibels or something. Im not sure how loud that is, but I havent gotten pulled over yet. Im just glad this state doesnt have inspections.

Inspections are all in the name of safety and insurance. So if your vehicle is insured, yet you have faulty brakes and are in an accident, why should you be covered by your insurer because you have an unfit vehicle? Why should they pay for your negligence and lack of maintenance if you get in an accident? Having an unsafe vehicle is just as bad as having an unsafe driver.

I fully agree with vehicle inspections, as annoying and picky as they are, because the last thing I want while I'm out driving is to be involved in an accident due to someone having an unsafe vehicle. Even a vehicle with the best driver cannot avoid an inevitible accident with faulty equipment.

I however DO NOT agree with emissions testing, especially in places like Ontario where more than half of the province is exempt from the program, while a small percentage of land area, but with the highest population density, gets screwed every 2 years, or on every new/used vehicle registration by shelling out $37.50 on 1988-2006 vehicles, all of which USUALLY have properly installed and functioning emissions systems. Most vehicles pass, while the odd few that might have major engine troubles, or just need a good tune up or have an exhaust leak fail. Yet I can move out to the boonies and rip my cats and mufflers off and run a straight pipe all day long because I don't have to comply with any emissions standards. As long as a mechanic inspects my vehicle and says it is roadworthy,I'm good to go.

I've taken in vehicles with custom exhausts for emission testing and they never said anything about the loudness, yet I go for a safety inspection to register the vehicle and they nitpick every little thing and give me a $1500 to do list after I told them I only paid like $600 and they they reply "Well, you get what you pay for."

I'd put a stock muffler on it then run it thru with a L7 15 in the back seat cranked all the way up and see what happens.
