Ok, so my Truck is going to hit 100,000 miles tomorrow so I figured its time to do some service.



Over the next few days I will be changing my Rear Diff fluid with Royal Purple, all 10 quarts of Trans with Royal Purple, Change Tranfer Case fluid with Royal Purple, Flush radiator and add Purple Ice, Change power steering fluid with Royal Purple, Clean MAF, Clean Throttle Body, Clean Air Filter, Change Fuel Filter, Change Trans Filter, Change belt with Gatorback, add Flex-a-Lite Trans Cooler....

Should be fun!

How are you going to change all the transmission fluid.. the pan is only 3-4qts if i remember right. (im about to change mine too)
I have 12qts of redline in the other room.

Have fun bro, make sure everything is nice and snug, 100,000 miles, stuff comes loose, make sure and check everything after a 100 miles

You pull the lines going to the cooler, place them in a bucket, start the truck and while it pumps out the fluid you add more. When it pumped out 10 quarts stop and check it.

I'll do a write up on it this weekend, I PM'ed it to whoever did the Trans How To, but it was never added.

 

I'm sure you've already thought of this, but I just thought I'd make sure you have some RTV gasket silicone for making a new gasket on the differential cover. I can't remember if you should use Blue or Black.

Why not do the front diff, too? If you have submerged it, I'd change the fluids.

A hint when you change the T-Case fluid. If you have driven your truck in the past hour the fluid can still be hot to warm. Be careful. The fluid likes to come out REALLY fast. I had some splashes, as it didnt drain so much as just shot out.

You don't need a special tool to replace the fuel filter. There are these little plastic clips that you have to take off, it only takes a minute. Make sure you have the right kind. I believe it is a single inlet from the gas tank side, then a dual outlet towards the front of the truck. It has been 16k miles since I replaced mine, so I can't quite remember. Just wear some goggles or something, because a little bit of gas will shoot out.

 

You need a pump to do the front diff. You have to suck it out of the hole cause you can't unbolt the cover without dropping the axle. At least on the new ones (98+).

 

so is the tranny fluid exchange difficult they want something like 120 130 to do it

 

Yes I know about the RTV sealant, I actually forgot when I was at AutoZone but I have to go back to Ford today to get my filter and gasket so I will ask the parts guy what type to use.

Thanks for the tip on the T-Case... I watch for it to squirt, I know I would have made a mess :? ...

I bought the little tool for the fuel filter, if I dont need it I'll take it back, its was only 9 bucks.

Daves right, you need to pump the front diff. I did front and rear with a pump about 5000 miles ago and it was a major pain in the ***, probably because of my cheap pump, but I got that stuff everywhere and was a pain. So I am only doing the rear this time.

The tranny exchange should be easy. I will let you know after I do it. I had the line off this last weekend and pumped some out and it wasnt too hard.

 

You could always sacrifice a shop-vac to the cause of axle dope replacement. What an odiferous adventure that would be.

 

Wow, its to early for big words... that is a very interesting idea... time to go hit up some garage sales to find a donor vac :)

 

I hooked up some long clear plastic tubing to do the jeep's front axle. You can see when it gets full and turn the vac off and then dump the contents of the tube. Repeat until nothing more comes out. Once you get the hypoid in that shop vac you'll never want to use it again. Of course if you take the filter out, there may be a chance of cleaning it out.

If you wanted to get really crazy you could build an inline resevoir, a bucket with the two tubes in the lid, the hypoid would stay in the cup due to gravity and the air would flow through to the tube. Of course that would still be messy but at least you could toss the bucket when you were done.

 

I know what my new project is... thats not a bad idea. I said I was going to find a vac at a yard sale so it could be my "Oil Vac" and no need to screw up the good vac. Then theres no need to worry about the mess either. When it starts to fill up, bottle the oil and take it to the recycling place.

That is a pretty good idea though.

 

on the fuel filter just push the colorful tabs IN!!! and pull out

i went to change mine and thought that it was like our 89 Bronco II in which you PULLED the tabs out. well i broke the tabs :(

long story short i took it to ford to do it because i was pissed, because i broke the clip they had to get new lines, grand total for everything including labor was a little more then $400!!!!!!!!
if anybody brakes any of their MANY fuel lines before the filter then let me know because i have mine still.
see ford just doesn't sell you the one line, no they sell you ALL of the fuel lines before the filter! as a set

 

I broke a tab on one of the clips, and used a handy zip-tie to secure it. I think it is more secure than the in-tact clips.

I realized a pump was needed for the front, but I figured if he was going to change one, why not change the other... And if it has been 5k miles since you redid both, why do the rear again??

 

Why do the rear again? ***** and Giggles. I figured I was placing an order for Royal Purple anyway so I figured why not. Cant hurt right?
