it looks like the Ranger is surviving bad truck sales. Ranger sales are down only 4%, as the rest of the truck market is down 18%. but Ford did take an $8.7 Billion dollar hit last month.

I highly suspect that hanging onto the ranger has more to do with the companies overall mpg ratings. I also suspect the additional year has to do with some sort of delay in the new F100.
Next time I buy.. I'll keep the ranger for boat and snow duties. I'm thinking something much lower and much quicker should be my next DD.

Rich you hit the nail on the head with why Ford is still keeping the Ranger around gas mileage. I also don't think you will see any changes to it since it will be gone in a couple of years.
As for the delay of the F-100 I believe it is because they still do not know were it is going to be built. Also the F-100 is not going to get that much better gas mileage then a F-150 since they are going to be built on the same chassis.

My old Ford Tempo 5 speed, was great on gas. I hated to give that car up, but it was so small and low to the ground it was a struggle for me to get in and out of it, as I have a bad back. I had a Chevy Silverado, but it was hell on gas.
A cross between the Ford Tempo and the F-150/Silverado was what I needed and I settled on the Ford Ranger XLT. Easy to get in and out of, and better on gas than the F-150 or Silverado. This has been working out great for me.
I think Ford's on the right track by building more fuel efficient vehicles.
