Edges are lifted both 2 and 4 wheel drive, and have a mono-color bumper, flare, and body paint scheme. Generally have rubber floors rather than carpet.
FX4 Level 2 refers to the flagship 4x4 of the Ranger fleet. Better equipped with a heavier rear axle equivalent to an Explorers except for the disc brakes and a better limited slip design in the rear as well. Some years had manual transfer cases. A better equipped XLT model (see below).
Splashes are an older trim with fancy graphics monotone paint that conveyed a real "sport truck" look.
XLT's are a high-end trim for Rangers with generally more standard stuff like leather wrapped wheels, carpet and so forth.
XL's are stripped-down models generally sold as commercial vehicles but some get bought new by the public.
Now there are "Sports" that I believe are what the Edge has become and perhaps other trim names I haven't kept up with.

I suppose you can look at it that way. All 4WD and Edge models are lifted compared to the normal 2WD models then. Any truck with blocks in the rear is "lifted" to my mind, lol -- even if it comes from the factory that way.

Contrary to popular myth, an open differential does NOT apply power to just one wheel at a time. It only appears that way when one wheel breaks traction.
You can get a limited slip in Edge models, but it's not standard. I put a locker in mine.

One thing to help distinguish the Splash is the mirrors are colormatched to the body paint.
The Edges had a front torsion bar suspension on 2wd. The XL and XLT had a coil spring on 2wd models.
I think torsion keys are showing up now, but this was a real consideration if you wanted to suspension lift or lower your Ranger. It was almost easier/cheaper to put Edge appearance items on an xl or xlt than to lift or lower an edge.

The sport package during that year consisted of:
Body color grille
Body color front and rear bumpers
Bright painted wheels
Spare tire lock
Sport sticker on tailgate
And that's it
