do you use one of these? im sure most of you do::::

how do you clean it? i cleaned mine with some simple green, and newspaper, and its still dirty as hell!

and when you empty it, what kind of container do you use to bring it back to autozone or wherever? ive got my last 3 oil changes inside milk cartons, and laundry detergent bottles....i need to take it in, but do you all use anything different?

 

acully i just bought one of these and used it on my splash and my XLT it is the BEST DAMN THING i have bought in a long damn time.....i love the spot for the old filter to drian.

and i use 99% of the time washer solevent bottels to take it to our local dump they have a oil place there.

and i normally use like brake clean or carb cleaner to clean the outside...

Screw that, it's just dirty ugly oil going into it anyway, right? I mean why clean it. Wipe it down with a rag and call it good, at least that's how it is in my shop.

As for transporting to recycling, I like to use old 5qt jugs, 1gal milk jugs, 5gal buckets....basically you can use whatever, as long as it has a lid.

 

Don't clean it. Itz only a waste of time. Throw it in a bag if your that concerned. As for taking the oil in we use a larger container with a spout. It really doesn't matter how you take it in because they don't let you leave the container anyway. But that still doesn't stop ppl from walking out and throwing whatever container in their trash cans outside. My gf's dad actually takes it to work and they have a 250 gal container that gets emptied once a month. The co has a lot of equipment to maintain.

I have the exact same thing also. Like most of the guys, I don't clean it. I store my used oil in a 5 gal bucket (with top of course) I got from Lowes for around $6. When it's full, I take it to the dump and empty it in their container.

 

Leave it draining into 55 gal drum.

 

i use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. and a cat litter pan to drain the oil into.

 

i put my old oil in the container for the new oil that i just put in. then set the drain next to my building until the next time i use it

 

i don't own one of those, but i clean all of my stuff with paint thinner when i am done

 

I just leave the oil in the drain pan until it's full, then take it to my local auto parts store for disposal. No need to empty the oil into another container. I wipe the top off with paper towels when I'm done.

 

yep i own one of those... i love it ;o) i don't really try to hard to keep it clean. like dsef82, i put the old oil back into the empty containers from the new oil.

 

I drain the oil right back into the 5qt container that i bought the new oil in. Then you can also see how much oil that you have burned since the last change. Makes sense aye?

EDIT: Yeah, and cleaning it is a huge waste of time, but if you're storing the container indoors, then i could see where you're coming from.

My friend has the same one which i usually use when i change mine. I pour the old oil in an empty 2 gallon kerosene(SP?) bottle, hey at 15 bucks for 2 gallons of the stuff at menards to heat the garage i found a good way to use that bottle twice. Which reminds me i have about 20 gallons of oil i need to take in. And what I usually use to clean the drain pan is some cheap paper towels the ones that are like 59 cents and some simple green or some really cheap glass cleaner, leave the good stuff for around the house

 

I use one everyday at work for mainly coolant collection so we can deposite that seperately from the oil.

 

I got the same one. But only use it on my other vehicles not on the ranger.. (dont need one on the ranger)
I use old 5qt bottles mostly.. I have used windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze, or 2 liters
in a pinch though.

 

Nice, I think we all bought the same drain pan. I use it all the time and love it, til I gotta empty it into jugs by myself. I usually take my old oil to this recycling yard down the road, they take it for free, call around I'm sure there's somewhere nearby. As for cleaning, I just use an old shop rag =].

 

simple.. drain oil into pan. hop in the ruck. drive to the auto store. dispose of oil right out of oilpan. buy new oil. fill truck back up with new oil there in the parking lot. wipe up pan with papper towels from store restroom. throw it all away in their trash can.

 

we use an old drawar from a 1930's fridge, i think its from a fridge? we been using it for as long as i can remember, its got a nice porcalain(sp) finish... cleans up like new with a paper towel... as far as old old, we put it in 1gallon jugs, lately tho i been using a 5gallon can that used to have paint tthinner in it.... actually, i was thinkin about making it into a dedicated old oil can.... paint it, and stencil "Old Oil" on it in construction yellow... but now yall say they wont let u have the can back? well thats just poopy.


Jango - its actually illegal here in NYS to change ur oil in a parking lot, i think they shoot u dead if they catch you.

 

Why doesn't anyone recycle their oil? We do a few things with ours,

first, used motor oil is great for lubrication in chainsaw blades. they sell special chainsaw oil but truck oil works fine. And this is tried and tested with lots of chainsaws. My dad has been sawing trees since Jesus was crucified and always reused motor oil.

Also, we use oil to start bonfires. It is really rainy up here so when we do burnings(from limbs of trees we cut down) we need to start them with oil.

Third, my personal favorite, recreating the exxon valdez spill. Hop in bathtub with about 12 rubber duckies and floating ship. Crash into "rock" and play cleanup.

uhh... drain the oil, then drive??? You kinda need the oil in the engine or you're screwed. I had a friend sieze (sp?) his engine cuz he ran with no oil...
