You have a open diff, with 3.45 gears. Assuming its still the stock rear end. I bet its Extremley sluggy with that motor, gearing, and tires. I would try and find you a 4.10 ls rear end in a JY for cheap. You would notice a lot from just that! Even lower gearing may be better like 4.56's or somthing. Depends on how much you really wanna put into it.

Yeh for the best performance but 4.10's are going to be easier to find and will be so much better than what he has now!

just junkyard a rear axel with 4.10s

unless you are gonna install them, it will cost more to have them put in.

No pull the whole rear end out it will save A LOT of time just to swap rear ends instead of gears.

I bet your truck is sluggish. I think my truck is a tad sluggish with 31's, 4.10's and a 4.0SOHC.
Definitely buy a complete rear as it'll be much cheaper. When I upgrade to a Level II rear I'll be selling my 8.8 and I think I'll be lucky to get $200 for it and its only got 65K 4.10's, L/S and clean enough you could eat off of it. $200 wouldn't even cover the labor to get the gears installed let alone the parts. Also look for one out of a Ranger as an explorer will take some welding to make it fit.

agree'd 3.45's a 2.3 and 31's=retarded. and swapping junkyard axles is cheapest but at 4.10(IF you can find one) it still wont be enough to get the motor happy, it needs the extra gear to help spin the weight of the tires, not just compensate for tire height, 4.10 would be an improvement because the gear he has is so terrible but still gonna be doggin on mpgs and any hill

I feel your pain dude. Throwin 31's on my all stock 2.5L. I just bought 4.10s for my 7.5 rear end from ebay for $100 shipped but I don't have to pay for labor. If you are going to mess with the rearend at all just get a 8.8 inch LS 4.10 axle from an Expo.

Oh and if you throw in a 5.0 that will fix the sluggishness REALLY fast.
