Manual trans problem, thoughts?

Manual trans problem, thoughts?
I've been having some problems lately with my 3.0 manual transmission. It is hard as hell to get into 1st gear or reverse from a stop. Sometimes I have to turn it off, then it will go into gear easily. Shift to other gears while driving is usually ok, but it seems rougher than usual. Any thoughts on what is about to die? I'm thinking its the slave cylinder...I had the clutch and slave replaced about 25-30k ago. What do you think it is and how much will it run me to fix?

Thanks for the advice...

After viewing this video, this sounds exactly like my symptoms. Now my question is, is there any way I can bleed the system without dropping the trans? I live in an apartment complex, don't have the tools or the know-how to take the whole system out and bleed it as shown in the video. Is there a method to easily bleed this system as it sits on the truck? Or am I looking at dropping a few hundred bucks to have a mechanic do it?

ok remember this is at 349 in the morning here.
IIRC the ranger slave is a self bleeding system and i would put money that even if you bleed the system it will do the same thing in about 10 min after you bleed it.
so try this. check the fluid in resovor get in your truck start it and see if it will go into gear. if it wont pump the clutch about 10 time and see if it will go in. if not pump some more and see if it will go in. if it does then you drive it around for about 5-10 min then stop and try to go into first again and it wont you need a new slave there is no way around it.

Mine is to the point I have to shut off the truck EVERYTIME I put in reverse and half the time when I put it in first...and I have to push the clutch to the floor and it still doesnt feel like it fully engages...
To help the OP, when going in reverse and about to put it in first and start going, I dont completely stop...I put it in first at a very slow backwards roll and it goes in smooth everytime. I just hold the shifter like Im about to shift in first with very little pressure, then after rolling for about 6in-1ft it falls right in gear.

I hate when I see this response. How awful is it to see the same questions come up all the time. us NEWB's really are jerks. The problem with search is what to search?
hard shift - 14 pages most unrelated
transmission trouble - 4 pages
etc...
What I can't understand is there are TONS of Topics in the HOW TO section, such as changing the color of your lights from green to blue, or install a electric tailgate lock, or subwoofers, or tinting headlights, or such, BUT nothing about something as serious as what probably brought these awful newbs who asked the question in the first place about their clutch to your Ranger Forums.
Of all the things that SHOULD be in the HOW TO section ... should be about the clutch. WTF good is a truck you can't drive?
Like you say "yep this problem comes up once a week people need to search" maybe it SHOULD be a sticky in the how to section?
I am new here, sorry if i offended you, it happens, I have been banned many times from GTAMC Home but so far I have found many people on here have been nice and helpful. but saying go search is NOT helpful. It only makes a bad situation worse.
At this point i absolutely HATE driving my 2002 Ford Ranger. I just bought the damn thing and it really would be nice to fix some of these problems that probably prompted the old owner to sell it in the first place. I hope to god i didn't make a bad decision to buy this thing. I had a chance to buy a nice S10, BUT I wanted a ford Ranger Edge. They simply look SOOOO sexy. Everywhere I go everyone i know comments on what a nice truck it is... I agree, i just wish i could drive the damn thing (get it in gear, and not have my headlights flash at everybody - another issue I am having).
My new clutch is now in at the parts warehouse and I will pick it up today to get it in there. I cannot live with this truck running like this.
I think i saw more helpful stuff on YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. about ranger clutches than I did on a ranger forum. thats sad. you guys are supposed to be the "ranger guys" Instead the ranger guys say "learn to search jerk" like kicking someone who is down. :(
I am sorry if I offended anyone. Just frustrated about seeing that one liner.

Well said Joe. The guys are here (some of them, not all) get frustrated. And as the night goes on (into the wee morning actually) they get more and more pissy. You just need to take any advice to can, ignore the haters, and be persistent.
I've been regular on here for a few weeks now and I still can't get responses half the time. If people can or want to help they will. Or they won't. It's a crap shoot.

Not to diminish anyone else's questions, but when someone has a legitiment problem such as not being able to drive their truck (which may be to get to work, or for work, or family vehicle) this is a pretty important issue. I too would hate seeing the same question over and over again (which is even more reason it should be in the how To section) but just saying search for it jerk, don't bother us with your major problems; doesn't help at all.
As for Downey's response.... I harbor no I'll feelings toward you. I just got pissed when I saw the response. It is not exclusive to this forum, I see it everywhere.
Honestly. I believe Forums ARE the best thing since sliced bread. Rewind 15 years. There were no forums, the only help u got was in person at the stealership or such. But now with the advent of forums. Now we have a whole group of people specialized in specific areas. Not one person has to be a know it all. We come here for friendship and learning. That's the beauty of it. U can make friends AND help people out. You can be someone's daily hero. You can save the day.
I am right now on my Blackberry 9700 and let me tell you. The internet is simply a god send. Example. My furnace was acting up and I popped on the internet and low and behold. Someone else with the same ol furnace had the same problem and they had a fix. No library can contain the wealth of information at our fingertips.
I know I am new here, who am I to speak out like this? No one special. Just someone with a big enough mouth to speak my mind lol.
Well I better get back to painting. My tenants move in sept 1. Eeek.

In this video... YouTube - Ford Ranger & Mazda B-Series Pickup Clutch Hydraulic Release System Bleeding Procedures He took it all off and hung it up to bleed the system... How much is involved in getting it all off the truck and bleeding it? Should I try that before I rip the tranny out? I bought a clutch kit, the parts counter person said it came with the slave as well but I do not see it in the box. They sold me a Luk Clutch kit part # 07-140 I do not believe this is the kit with the slave aargh. Maybe my truck just needs a good bleed to get it working properly.
question... do I need a slave cylinder? Is that what usually goes bad? I do not want to take the parts out of the box if i need one with a slave and have to return this one.

Bleed all of the old fluid completely out of the system, by bleeding as much out of the reservoir, before you get the reservoir completely empty, then lightly (to avoid too much mixing with the old stuff) pour new dot-3 (IIRC) into the reservoir. keep bleeding till the new, clean fluid comes out of the bleeder valve. Top off fluid in reservoir, and take it for a test drive.
