cleaning the engine

I just spray mine with degreaser and rinse with cold water. Regular garden hose works fine. After everything dries I spray it with CD-2 engine detailer. It goes alot faster if you have an air compressor to blow off most of the water then towel dry the rest. Last time I didn't cover anything. Just keep from getting the alternator and power dist. box soaked and you'll be fine. Do this when the engine is cold.

pressure washer...at least a few feet away...engine running...hose everything down...then spray with detailing spray...drive off. No need to cover anything. I learned that one straight from the dealership...they charge $25 to do it and call it an "engine detail." Just a hot pressure washer, sprayed from a distance (don't get too close).

I'm sorry to bump such an old thread but I've been wanting to detail my engine for so long. So what would you guys recommend is the best to clean an engine?
And what do you do? Just spray it on everything (minus the alternator and power dist box, as mentioned) and then just rinse it off with the hose? No scrubbing or anything? Do I need to be careful when I spray the hose to not get it on anything or should everything be fine?
I want to do this when I get my new intake :)
