Name that noise!

Just recently my truck has been making some funny sounds.

This one at startup has caught my attention. Kinda of a raspy/rattle sound.

Listen at 0:59 and 0:22.

I've looked over the truck at startup and just sitting there. Nothing seems to be loose, rubbing, or rattling that I can see. Oil was changed within the last 1000 miles, using 5w30 synthetic blend. Truck has about 105k miles.

Anybody got this sound or know what it might be and how to fix it?

It is hard to tell from the video. Can you get a better one with the hood open? If it is a rattle coming from the top of the engine/valve cover area it could be the lifters/rockers. The oil pump could be going or clogged causing a knock. Does it sound like a rod or bearing knock? Or a valve in the oil pump could be bad causing the knock. What kind of oil filter did you use?

The hood is open and I have the camera setting next to the truck pointed away because the mic can't handle it otherwise. I can't really tell where it's coming from but it almost sounds like the back part of the motor closer to the firewall.

I'm using a Motorcraft oil filter.

Could this be timing chain rattle? I hear so much about it and don't know jack about it.

Got a new video with a better camera. It's right after startup, listen at 0:45, 38, 24, & 7. I've checked over everything simple like I said and all fluids are good. It just started making this sound so I'm curious. Any guesses?

Also found some other goodies on the camera. lol

Thanks.

I can't see the videos at work thanks to Websense but I'm going to say its probably timing chain rattle or if you have the AC on then it is probably the compressor rattling.

AC is not on. I guess I should add that I recently went from 10w-30 to 5w-30. I used the 10w for a long time and have only used the 5w for the past 2 oil changes. That is what is in it now.

Whatever it is do you think oil viscosity would make a difference?

Oil viscosity could make a difference. Did it make the noise before switching oil? Do you know what the factory recommends?

It didn't make that noise before hand. Factory suggests 5w-30. I used 10w because they had a deal running for a long time at the local store.

Almost considering an oil change to see what that will do.

Its the starter. Try this. Pull the plug to the fuel shutoff and let the engine die. Try starting it and see if the sound happens. Last time I head that same exact sound was on Alon's truck and I told him to do the same exact thing. We pulled the starter and a bunch of sand fell out, due to Pismo and Glamis, but the new started fixed the problem.

Leave your oil alone. LOL

x2

i've seen sand and small bits of gravel get into a starter and make all sorts of weird noises just after or during startup.....but they go away after a few seconds.

No, I haven't fixed it yet. It still starts up great.

I'm gonna wait as long as I can and hopefully it doesn't leave me stranded anywhere. *knocks on wood*

these guys are dead on, mine made the same noise for ever a year before it failed on me. but mine failed when it was 0* covered in snow/ice/mud. I dont think you will have the problem down there.

Then it started working again but id blow the 50amp fuse. I got a used starter from Trepaul86, works like a top and sounds so much better than that rattle.
