HVAC fan blows, but not much 2005 Ranger
OK, I have had it. I will be taking this into the dealer for a fix if I can't find something simple.
My 2005 Ranger heater / A/C fan work OK, the ranges 1-2-3-4 all operate at slightly increasing air volume, but at setting 4, it is really a pittiful flow. My old 1999 Ranger would clear the Fall frost from my windshield in a minute and I would be warm (whole cab) in only a few miuntes.
Ever since I bought this 2005, i have felt the fan speed was "de-tuned" from where it was on my 1999. This 2005 fan takes for ever to heat the cab and defrost the windshield.
Anyone else encounter this? I just HATE dealing with the dealers, even with Warranty, so I would like to fix myself, but kind of at a loss. With it operating at all settings and sequentially increasing fan speed, everything seems to work, I just wonder if it is low input voltage or a bad / weak motor?

I'm not an electrical guy at all.
But, I did spend at year designing automotive HVACs. First step IMO is to figure out if it's electrical or mechanical. I'd measure the voltage at the motor on each of the settings. If it goes up each step then you know it's not the controls or the resistor card.
Does the fan speed up each incriment? If not but the voltage goes up. Then it's the motor intself or the fan attached to it is rubbing something.
Now if those turn out good. It's gotta be something blocking airflow. If all your vents and temp "work" just don't perform well.. then I'd 95% bet something is blocking the inlet side of the fan.
Put the ac on "max" and try running the fan speeds. (temp mode doesn't matter here) If it blows like it should when set to "max" then I'd be for sure that something is in the cowl (under the wipers) or something is blocking that air path on the fresh air side.
General note to all:
9 times out of ten when a automotive HVAC fails to work properly. It's one of these 5 things. 1) Blower motor went bad. 2) Resistor card went bad 3) Controls (in dash) or the vacuum hoses going to the HVAC went bad. 4) Water drain plugged up (water getting into pass compartment). 5) Some sort of debris is plugging up the inlet side of the blower motor.
Often time it's like anything else in life. One thing happens and then causes others to fail. For instance debris (leaves) get into the inlet side. They cause the fan to chew them up, they migrate into the mode doors, and even plug up the drain. Now if operated like this for long you'll have several failuers. The motor gets wore out. The mode doors don't work right, and you have water on the inside of the car! And if you let it go long enough you'll burn out the resistor card.
But hey.. what do I know?

I had this same issue in my 08 ford ranger,very little air flow in all vents.I found they are a little screen behind the blower motor that was clogged up with dirt and leaves.I took it be the local shop and had them blow it out with air hose.Make sure they blow it from under the hood toward the dash board.Be prepared to clean up the floor board and passenger seat from all the debris.We put the blower fan assembly back in and air flow to all vents was restored 100 percent.
