Making 1 in-dash harness out of 2
Hey guys,
I was just wondering how hard it would be to make 1 in-dash harness out of 2. I basically need to wire all the power stuff from my 2WD harness onto my 4X4 harness that has the manual windows and door locks.
There's a salvage yard 200 miles away from me that wants $150 for a power harness and I'll buy it if I absolutely have to but I just hate to waste $150 if I don't have to.
Thanks,
Brian

I did a how to one time for a 2000. Here's a link to it. Should be similar for yours...

Thanks for the link. The reason I asked how to do this is because literally called 22 salvage yards yesterday and today looking for a 2004 in-dash wiring harness for a 4X4 with the power options and NOBODY had one. I called the little mom and pop places and the big dogs like LKQ.
It was insane ... not only that ... I called two different dealerships and they said that power option wiring harness is obsolete. I can not believe they don't even make it anymore.
So, If I can't find a wiring harness, would you be willing to make 1 wiring harness out of my 2 wiring harnesses? I'd be willing to pay good money to have this done.
I got a lot of work done on the on my project today, and I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Brian

Best thing to do is get the factory wiring diagrams for the year of your vehicle. You can get a Ford wiring shop manual for your year.
Here is one for 10 bucks as of right now:
FORD / 2004 RANGER PICK UP TRUCK WIRING DIAGRAMS - eBay (item 150525086841 end time Dec-25-10 18:59:13 PST)
Trust me these things are a lifesaver, plus you will use it more than you think.
BTW I checked a dealer here in Knoxville. They said there were 6 for my 2000 model somewhere in Wisconsin. The dealer quoted me 350 for it, which isn't too bad of a price (especially for no pinning to be done), but if you can find a cheaper harness go with that. If I was you I would go to the dealer in person. They are way more willing to help when you are right in front of them. If they say they can't get it, tell them to search their parts network.
Hey what exactly was the specs on the donor harness you used vs your vehicles?

If they can find one for me, I'm going to give them a 2008 cluster for free.
(For some reason I don't think I'll be giving that cluster away ...lol)

Thanks for responding to my thread.
I actually found one salvage yard that had the wiring harness that I needed on Wednesday and they were suppose to hold it for me but the dumb asses crushed the truck on Friday.
It's the salvage yard in Blountville, TN Ph # 423-323-0325
I'll tell you more about it later. I'm actually in the process of doing my conversion now.
But here's the specs on my truck
It's in my sig, but I'll type it out ... It's a 2004 Ranger XLT 4X4 with the 4.0 SOHC and
5-speed manual transmission with the power options.
Check my project thread out, and you'll see what I'm going through right now.

Haha AutoTruck Salvage! I was there at the end of last month to talk about getting one for mine. He told me to come back the next day but I was only in town for one day. What did he quote you?
I wished I could hook you up with this 99 harness I pulled. It was 4x4, 4wabs, 4.0, cruise, and fog. But they changed the modules in 2001 I think. Instead of RAPS they have something else, CMT I think or something like that.
Also the : "Hey what exactly was the specs on the donor harness you used vs your vehicles?" was intended for vwcat......lol.

Well, I called him back and he was "It's gone ... we crushed that truck"
I was so pissed, because that was the only place on Car-Part.com that had the wiring harness I was looking for and that girl acted like she had it in her hand putting my name on it.
Then the dealerships are lying to me about the new wiring harness being obsolete, because my truck is only a 2004 and the auto manufactures are required to make replacement parts for atleast 10 years.
I wish I could buy your wiring harness, but I really need a 2004+ wiring harness because of the digital odometers.

Yeah the guy you talked to is the owner. Yeah you can tell by the tone in his voice that he is an SOB. He quoted me 200-225 because of the labor of taking it out. I should have asked him about taking it out myself to lower the cost. There was a junkyard here in knoxville that I talked to and they said if I wanted to take one out myself it would be 100 bucks, but they didn't have my year on the lot. Totally forgot about the digital odometers. One thing to note about car-part is that those parts could be a month old. I've talked to many of a junkyard and they say they get calls because of car-part on parts they sold weeks ago. The best thing to do is use craigzoom.com and search "2004 ranger" under autoparts and just keep clicking through each city. Of course its hard to find a parts truck for a 2004. Good luck man! I'm in the same predicament as you, I've been looking all over for the right harness.

I have a bunch of harnesses laying around that are from 1998-2000 and one 2001 and one 2004. I used a 99 harness for the donor. All 98-00 harnesses are similar but different. In 98 the air bag module is under the pass kick panel, on 99 & 00 its under the cup holder. A 98 also has crash sensors on the radiator support. On 98 & 99 the harnesses have a big square plug on the drivers side up above the e brake that feeds another small harness that goes down to the frame, on 00 that harness is built into the dash harness and it runs down the center hump to feed the frame. Other than that you have different harnesses for power options, 4wd, and maybe flex fuel and abs. In my case I piggy backed the new wires on the original harness.
If I modify your harness Brian, I would probably add the wires to the 4wd harness. On my conversion I also had to add 1 wire to the under hood harness. I'm not sure if its needed on yours. I will be getting an 04 Ranger soon and it is 4wd with power so I would have something to compare it to.

You are probably right because most of the V6 parts trucks I've encountered were 4x4.
Yes that is correct about the dash for power options ( i would also like to add cruise, but this is only prefered since it is only like 4 wires to splice in: brake switch wire, instrument panel indicator, cruise signal and ground).
Just to give full specs:
2.5L Automatic
2wd
RABS
Just out of curiosity:
I know of the box connector behind the dash for the 99 model harness you used. I know that the door connector is actually behind this connector. Did you just leave the box connector inline with the door connector or did you cut that part out and splice those wires together. Also, did you add the RAPS module for keyless entry? I know on the 99 model it is in the back of the cab and the wiring goes through the previously mentioned box connector. So if you did add it, how did you go about doing so. I think in 2000 they relocated the box behind the dash on the passenger side, or at least near the fuel inertia switch (what it looks like from the ford wiring diagram location pages (151-8 E3))

I know that the PCM and PATS module are paired together, but from my readings RAPS isn't. Hmmmm. Well I got a RAPS module out of 99 Mazda (sure its the exact same as a 2000 or probably that body style), same part numbers as the Explorer ones. I hooked up the essential wires to a power supply and powered it on. Also I hooked up a relay to test the functions. Hitting buttons on the fob triggered the relay, so it looks as though the RAPS module doesn't need communication from anything to work properly. Oh BTW you can add the Explorer keypad directly to the RAPS module, like 6 wires, Rangers and Explorers both have the default keypad codes posted on the box label.

FINALLY GOT A HARNESS TODAY!!!
Well I had to drive 4.5 hours one way to get it, but here is my story.
Found the parts car on craigslist, called the guy up and he said it didn't have 4wabs, it was automatic, 2wd, and had power windows/locks/mirrors but no cruise control. I said thats fine and said it would be 50 for the dash harness.
Well I get there and take it all apart and first thing I saw under the hood (disconnecting the battery) was that it had the connector for cruise control. After taking down the steering column I looked at the 6 pin connector and this whole thing was prewired for cruise!!!!!!!! I noticed a bunch of spliced wires connected to the ignition switch and evidently the past owner installed like a 100 dollar cruise control system that makes another signal arm like switch on your column. Wow this guy could have saved some money and trouble and actually went OEM. HAHA. Well I also took out the bay harness and this thing also is prewired for FOG LIGHTS!!!!!! They guy said 50 since he consider both harnesses to be the same and charged me 10 bucks for the RAPS and GEM module (I dont know if you need one for power accessories but for 10 bucks I was gonna grab it). 60 (harness and boxes)+60(gas)=120 bucks for two harness that I don't have to re-pin and are a definite fit for my truck. The Ranger gods were smilling on me today.

Looks like you was about to drive 5 1/2 hours to Blountville to pay 200.....lol.
I'm serious try Craigzoom.
Just type in "2004 Ranger" and the select "auto parts" and just start clicking states and then cities around you. It took me about a week of checking once a day till I found that guy. The only problem comes from the fact that yours is a 04 model and you really don't see that many private parties parting out that late of year, but you never know. You may get lucky.
Man I've got my work cut out for me. I'm gonna have to transplant all the crap from the doors I bought to mine (window regs, lock actuators etc), pull the dash and other random stuff under the hood(radiator, reservoir) to install these. Since I'm gonna put in a EATC and I need to replace my heater core, I'm just gonna prewire for the EATC and install the heater core will I have it all apart. Gonna be a good weekend. Probably gonna have to wait till after Christmas, maybe even till the Spring because it has been so dang cold lately. Around 26 degrees in the day, and I have a de-attached garage with no heaters.
Oh BTW I think you may need to get the GEM along with that harness. From what I've read in the past couple of days is that if you don't have 4wd or power accessories you don't have a GEM, but a CTM (central timer module). I heard that you needed to get a GEM to add the power accessories from that guy in Blountville. I thought he was dumb but turns out he is right.
