2000 ranger 2.5 speed sensor/speedo issue

2000 ranger 2.5 speed sensor/speedo issue
Hello all and thanks in advance. I got this 2000 ranger 2x2 with a 2.5 liter. The speedo didn't work until I found that the speed sensor connector was unplugged. The clips that hold the connector on were broken. I used some liquid electrical tape and stuck it back on and got the speedo to work. The problem is that it doesn't work right. As soon as you take off the speedo maxes out. I'll say if your doing apartment speeds around 15-20mph the speedo says almost pegged out. And any faster then it does peg out and the computer cuts the fuel injector duty cycle.

replaced speed sensor in rear diff. Checked the connector pins and they are ok.
It is getting connection.
Any ideas? No cel but I'm headed out there to use this new program I got on my laptop to see if there is any codes that didn't throw the cel. FYI it's autoenginunity. I'll report the codes if I get any.

Look underneath the truck directly below the driver seat and you will see a large 40-pin connector. Remove the center bolt and check for water/corrosion. This is a problem area on 2000~2003 Rangers and moisture inside that connector can cause crossed circuits for any of the wires to the rear of the truck.

As for cleaning the conncetors I sprayed a bunch of contact cleaner into both of the connectors and kept applying every couple hours. But it's still pretty dirty. Is there an aftermarket repair kit for that connector that is fairly cheap? I got an apartment and I'm trying to avoid having to take the seat and carpet out to get to the female connector. Thanks.

Problem. Ok even though that connector c309m/f was very corpses from the top or inside of the truck it wasn't the problem. I removed the male and female connectors like removed all of the pins. De greased and cleaned everything. Then took some contact cleaner on all of the pins and let em soak. I even replaced the corroded pins because they had pits from rust. But Now that connector and wiring is like new and still exact problem. I checked continunity from the sensors connector to the connector inside the cab an it's perfect. I'm dumbfounded. I don't know what else to try. Any problems with the firewall bulk connectors? How about the actual abs module? Again the symptoms are the odometer and speedo. This time I took off by just letting out the clutch slowly and no gas. As I took off it constantly increased to about 40mph on the dial and the odometer was rolling fast. Then any faster and it just maxes out and the fuel cut out. I'm lost.

have you replaced the speed sensor? I replaced mine a while back due to an odd issue. Mine was located ontop of the pumpkin. it was pretty inexpensive.
My speedo is fast while I'm under 40-45 MPH. If I want to go 35, I need to have the guauge at 39. If I want to go 45, I need to have the gauge at 46-47ish. It trues-up at 65MPH and stays true afterwards. Not really a big deal, but really got me confused early on when I was driving around the city...everyone pissed and tearing around me!

Yes I bought a new sensor. When I went to replace the sensor is when i found that the connector was unplugged. So I installed the new sensor anyway. After I couldn't get it to work I put the old sensor back in and It does the exactly same thing. Same results. Thats why I am leaning towards another component. I know the sensor is fine because I have a known good one and the factory one and they react the same. And as of now the wiring from the sensor to the inside of the cab to the 40 pin connector underneath the carpet under the drivers seat. So from there I don't know where else to go. It seems like the compouter is processing the signal from the sensor incorrectly. Because the speedometer works it just works incorrectly. like the computer is outputting the incorrect frequency or voltage or signal. I'm not sure. If I knew the spec that the computer is supposed to have for input and output I could just go to the computer and see if it is correct. But where the computer is and what pins to fish is the question.

98~00 RABS-equipped Ranger - the rear axle signal is received by the Generic Electronic Module, a correction is made for tire diameter and a 0~12v square wave is output to the speedometer, PCM and speed control. The correct frequency of this output is 8000 pulses/mile.
