12v power source arg!

Goodafternoon everyone. i just finished hardwiring power to my little gps unit.

my plan was to wire it into the yellow and black going into my headunit so that it would only be powered when radio has power.

I guess i was wrong because it is an always hot power source....

any help for what i can tap into in order to have a powersource that is only powered while the truck is on?

thanks

Lee

How about the remote turn on wire coming from the back of the head unit?

It only has power when the ignition switch is in the on position.

That's assuming you have an aftermarket head unit.

yea the red should be your acc wire... the best way to test it is this.... get a volt meter, find a solid groung and hold the black with from the volt meter to it and grab the red from the volt meter and touch an exposed piece of the yellow with the truck off. if it reads something other than "0" then its a hot. try the red one and it should read "0" then turn the key and try it again and it should read 12 or 13 and thats your acc wire. another thig did you just cuz off the cig plun from the gps wire???

i dont have a volt meter here at school. something i need to invest in sometime though, just not now.

you think i would be safe trying the red and black wire. how does it work, it gets constant power as well as switched power, constant through the yellow and only when running through the red?

i picked up a little two cigarette lighter unit and wired it in and plugged gps into it. then tucked it behind the dash. i plan on using the other one for cell phone charger with a springy cord running out near the airbag switch so i dont need to plug an ugly phone charger into my dash

ok that cig thing works... umm the other wire is called the accessory wire... it only gets power to it when the key in the start position. like when you turn it like one click and the stereo turns on and nothing else. or some cars it is you turn it backwords.. same thing. but that way the gps will only get power to it when the truck is(or tech. only whne the radio is on to keep it simple) you understand that? i think i cover it for ya.
