steering wheel tilt causing electrical problems

if I keep my steering wheel in its current position everything works fine, but it I lower or raise it a single click it will

turn my blinkers on but they wont blink,
cause my tail lights to turn off but head lights remain on
change the gear I am in but the shifter doesn't move and the display still stays I'm in the original gear
engage my starter

imagine the cartoon version of a truck having a loony toons style panic attack
as far as I can tell no work has been done in that area to I'm thinking lose connections maybe, and or something pulling on my shifter cable? I really have no idea where to start or what to look for with so many different things happening at once but I need to replace the plastic rod connecting my ignition to the key switch ( the tilt was causing this problem well before this part broke)so this will be the time to fix it
