power window switch not working

OK, so I got a new truck, new to me at least, its a 2002 and I wanted all the "luxary" items like power windows, doors, and mirrors. I had a '95 ranger for 6 years and never ran into an issue with the power windows.

So I think its the rocker switch on the passenger door that isnt working in just ONE direction, it doenst go up. It'll lower the window fine and the motors on both windows are fine, the driver's side controls however work perfectly fine, its just the passenger's side which clicks (sounds like its working) but nothign happens, making the window go down is fine. Since I've never had either of my truck's doors apart I dont know what the back of the switch looks like, I'm envisioning either a molded connector or 3 wires or somehting, two directional ones and a common...

Since I dont know for sure what I should check first thats why I'm asking here. What do you guys think, a loose wire? A broken switch? How easy is it to get the door panels off to take a look at the back of the switch, is it even needed? Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!

Thanks, I searched when I first got the truck as that was one of the first things I noticed, but that thread wasnt created yet!! :D

BTW, whats the best way or how do I get the switch off or the door panel off? It looks pretty sleek, not to much to get it with..

There are two screws under the handle part that you use to close the door. Unscrew those two screws and pull and lift a little and badda bing badda boom you've got it off.

I'm having the same exact problem. Drivers side will roll up and roll down both windows. Passenger side only rolls the window down, it wont roll it up.

I read through that thread and it didnt help at all. Any ideas?

I pulled the switch out, even put it on a multi-meter and checked for continuity. I figured out how the switch worked, the common ground, etc. I would hit a direction and the meter would beep (if I had the right lead) and the same in the other direction, so I know the switch works.

My question now is where does that switch wire all run to because I need to know where else the problem could be, I could check the wires with a toner or maybe its disconnected where ever else the switch wire runs to.

ELectrical gurus, got any suggestions?

I had loose connections with my door locks. Pulled the door panel off, someone had worked on the truck before I bought it. The retaining clips were broken , so I used plant wire to hold everything together. No problems since then. Switches were ok, connections were not

ahh, yea I checked the connections, all my clips are in good condition, I even took a swap of alcohol on the contacts to see if there was any grime or grit buildup that could be causing it.

The LB/BK wire at the master and passenger switch is 12V power feed from the window safety relay. The switch simply flips the power and ground to the motor.

If the window will go down but not up from the passenger switch only I'd suspect a bad (burnt) contact inside the switch.

If you remove the connector at the passenger switch and alternately apply power and ground to the YE/RD and RD/YE wire you should be able to run the window up and down.

I'll look into that tonight then. How would the burnt contact concept work if I can get electrical continuity throughout the circuit if I put it on a meter?

If the passengers window functions normally from the driver’s side (master switch) you can rule out the wiring between the two switches, motor, passengers switch center (neutral position contacts), and the common ground. Since you can run the window down from the passengers switch you can also rule out the power feed since its common to both up and down functions. This only leaves the up contacts in the passengers switch.

Passengers switch power/ground flow (window down): LB/BK feeds common power through switch terminal 2 to YE/RD wire to motor. RD/YE wire from motor is connected to switch pin 1 to WH/YE wire through drivers side switch to common ground.

Passenger switch power/ground flow (window up): LB/BK feeds common power through switch terminal 1 to RD/YE wire to motor. YE/RD wire from motor is connected to switch pin 2 to TN/LB wire through drivers side switch to common ground.

I'll try replacing the switch then, does anyone know a place to get a replacement rather reasonable, or does anyone have an extra around they are willing to sell... maybe from a wrecked ranger?

I googled replacement switches but cant seem to find just a window switch and I think that a dealership is going to be way overpriced if they even had it.

I got it fixed for under $30 by just getting a new switch from the dealer.
