Where are my MPG's!!

Im 16 and my pap gave me his old truck. I have a 1998 XLT 4.0 auto 4x4. I hate that i get about 12 MPG. I know its because i drive with my foot threw the floor but I like to be able to hear the engine. I want to maybe get an exhaust so i can here it just cruising? what should I get is my big question. I want it to sound decent but not stupid loud. I dont know a whole lot about cars yet but my dad is a mechanic and he is big on everything being right and legal so i cant straight pipe it. The main reason I need some mpgs is because I had to quit my summer job when school started. Im not looking for massive increase just maybe like 18 mpg? im willing to spend alittle money if its gonna save in the end or atleast sound better!

Thanks guys

Take your foot out of the throttle. If you dad is a mechanic he should know that an exhaust won't give you any MPG gains.

Start driving it like your Old man.
I see 17 mpg combined constantly. As for exhaust? Magnaflow's are stupid loud. Flowmasters aren't to bad if you get the right one. GlassPacks (cherrybombs) are pretty much strait pipes.

My 2008 XLT with 5 Speed Automatic with Overdrive runs about 16 MPG average between city and highway. I am running a K&N Lay Flat Drop in Filter for better flow (because they really don't add horsepower), and I am running a Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Muffler (3 chamber design). My power programmer allowed me to change shift points and whatnot, but the only way to get better MPG is to get a car. One thing about trucks, the words MPG should never be talked about, lol, no offense.
