Wire in shift lever for overdrive

I was told from another forum that the wire in the shift lever for overdrive was shorting out the 10 amp fuse in position 2 in the inside fuse box.My 10 amp fuse keeps blowing but it waits 3 weeks before it goes out.If my wire was doing this wouldn't it blow the fuse more often?Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2002 Ford Ranger?I already replaced the blower motor relay and the blower motor. All speeds work on the blower.Any ideas what would blow the fuse after 3 weeks?Bill.

There are 2 wires for the O/D Cancel button and they make a right turn as they come out of the hollow shift shaft to go down the top of the column. Sometimes these wires chafe through the insulation and short intermittently to the shifter when it is moved or when the truck hits a bump. Pull off the upper column trim to inspect them.

How about cutting the OEM Sw out of the circuit and add a dash switch with indicator ?

An ordinary "momentary on" pushbutton switch will work to toggle the O/D off and on. You could use the existing "OD OFF" light in the cluster or reroute to a 12V indicator somewhere else.

Clip the wire as they go in the steering column that way the wire should be good.
Splice wire from there to the switch. Hopefully the O/D Light will work as normal but I am no Auto Electrical Engineer so I am guessing.

Good Luck and post the result if you do this.

I put a couple of layers of heatshrink tubing over the 2 wires as a precaution and used the factory switch.
